Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia dead at 79

Associate Justice of the Supreme Court Antonin Scalia was found dead Saturday on a luxury resort in West Texas, federal officials said.

Scalia, 79, was a guest at the Cibolo Creek Ranch, a resort in the Big Bend region south of Marfa. MySanAntonio.com said he died of apparent natural causes.

I just hope the GOP in the Senate find a spine and do what Reid did for years...declare no confirmation hearings will be heard.
Let the voters decide where they want the court to go and not a lame duck.

Rest in peace Justice Scalia!

Scalia's death is one of those plumb line moments for me when I can tell what politics has done to my soul. Concern for his loved ones was the third thing that came to mind. The first was how the balance of power may have shifted in the Supreme Court and what effect that was going to have on me. The second thing I thought of was how I was going to have to endure at least a week of liberal grave pissing and the possibly a year of liberal bitching and moaning if the Senate blocks a replacement.

Sometime I forget it's not about me and I'm pretty sure that is not a good thing.

I'd say you're not alone in your assessments, and in the order they occurred to you/me.

There could well be yet another verb to be invented:

Stall, delay, refuse to confirm, filibuster. The Senate must hold firm -- and yet, as we've seen time and time and time again, the Republican-controlled Senate will capitulate before the war even starts.

Sorry, but I cry foul play!  There are 2 executive orders before SCOTUS to rule on; 2nd amendment and amnesty.

I predict a liberal justice will be placed.  Rulings will be in favor of amnesty = DEM votes and DEM presidency.  Ruling in favor of Hussein's e.o. on 2nd amendment.

Yes we are truly and royally screwed!

Pray for a miracle!  Seriously.  PRAY FOR A MIRACLE!!
I believe in the United States of America as a government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed, a democracy in a republic, a sovereign Nation of many sovereign States; a perfect union, one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice, and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes. I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it, to support its Constitution, to obey its laws, to respect its flag, and to defend it against all enemies.

Teachers Unions at Risk of Losing “Agency Fees”

Now a case awaits hearing by the U.S. Supreme Court that could dramatically change this picture. The Far Left periodical In These Times calls Friedrichs v. California Teachers Association the case “that could decimate American public sector unionism.” Perhaps that’s simply an ideological overstatement. Nonetheless, the case, if decided for the plaintiffs, could end the practice of “agency” fees—money paid to the union by nonmembers in exchange for collective bargaining services. Unions call them “fair-share” fees and assert that their elimination would create a class of free riders, workers who would pay nothing while still enjoying the higher salaries and other benefits negotiated by unions.

That could mean the death of unions.

A Congressional session runs for one year, January 3rd to sometime in December.

There are two sessions for each “Congress” (odd year to odd year). Adjournment means that Congress is out of session, it is closed to business.

This is in contrast to a recess, which we might think of as “time off” or “pause.”
After Congress is adjourned, there are formal processes involved in reconvening.

The Constitution forbids either the Senate or the House to adjourn for more than three days without the permission of the other chamber.

A “recess appointment” can not be made during adjournment. There is no provision for appointment during adjournment.

In 2007, Schumer Called For Blocking All Bush Supreme Court Nominations

During a Sunday morning appearance on ABC’s “This Week,” Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer decried the intent of many Senate Republicans to prevent President Barack Obama from appointing the successor to deceased Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

But less than a decade ago, Schumer advocated doing the same exact thing if any additional Supreme Court vacancies opened under former President George W. Bush.

Now Senate Democrats want Barrack Obama to pick a Liberal Justice to remake the USSC with the death of of Justice Scailia.

Yet these hypocrites seem to forget they used the filibuster, and even racism to delay and finally deny George w. Bush's nominee Miguel Estrada a seat on the federal bench.

Democrats and Leftist Groups labeled Mr. Estrada as "Politically Dangerous," because if confirmed they felt that he might ascend to the USSC as the first Hispanic on the high court.

For 28 months Democrats and Leftist Groups used every racist tactic in the book to deny and delay an up or down vote.

So ruthless were these tactics that Estrada's Wife miscarried their child and later killed herself, which promoted Estrada to withdraw his nomination to the federal bench.

It is the same when you are stupid."

USAToday has a list of possible nominees:

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2016/02/13/scalia-replacement-obama-nominees/80357134/

Don't like any of them.

Now just because obumbles nominates someone does not necessarily mean that the person is ratified by the senate.  I'm guessing his first choice will be a flaming liberal that gets promptly voted down. Then the next will be a left of center moderate.

Typically the court does not like to give a single president more than two justices to seat on the bench.

This will probably drag on until late summer.  The closer to the election we get, the more I get worried about a recess appointment by the dictater in chief.  Then there is the possibility of a dem controlled senate next year.

Nothing good is going to come of this unless next year one of the liberals on the bench retires and (assume) a GOP president gets to a appoint with a GOP senate to ratify.

I agree with some of your sentiments, but really disagree with others. I too feel empathy towards the surviving family, however...

It is not about the collective. It is about every individual that makes up the collective. Those two things, in spite of looking very similar, are completely different. It IS about you. And it IS about ME. And our kids, and our kids kids. It is about nothing short of whether people like you and I and the future generations, will have a relationship WITH government as the left wants, or a relationship TO government, as individuals.

There is no reason to feel bad about your rational self interests coming to the surface first, in this time and place that we live, where our individual self interests have been under attack for decades by collectivists. The order in which your concerns come to the surface doesn't define you, as lefties would assert. It is a product of the corrupt environment we live in, survival instinct, and pragmatic prioritization. Put simply, we are at war. While it is a quiet war, make no mistake, it IS a war. You are prioritizing accordingly, even if it doesn't sit right with you. War is hell.

So don't be too hard on yourself, you've done nothing to deserve it.
