A small thread, but not many campfires being lit at Skin's, since most of the primitives are either dead from overdose or hung over from last night.

Planning a trip to the Badlands of South Dakota. Looking for advice.

We'll have one full day to hike and explore in mid-January. Any suggestions on parts of the Park to visit, specific areas to hike?

Any advice on where to stay? Eat?

Thanks in advance!

I've been to the Badlands, and my advice is for you to take a long hike, and don't sign yourself into the trail registration log at the beginning.

1. Bring your long johns!

I've never been, but I know it'll be damned cold. And beautiful...
take care out there.

2. I was going to suggest snake bite kit but being there in January may change the snake situation - so

never mind!

3. I'm not too worried about snakes in January, but I get your point.

I've had my heart in my throat a couple times here in Wisconsin.

The Badlands are right in dutch508's backyard.

That's what I thought.  Dutch is probably reading an APB for the Scuba primitive at this very moment.  In any event, we should probably keep an eye on the obituaries from that part of South Dakota for when this primitive snuffs it or goes missing.

I'm also not sure why this moron is asking about amenities around the Badlands.  As I recall, there is exactly one restaurant in the Badlands, and it's part of the gift shop.  There might be another one at a gas station in Interior.  It's not exactly a blue city smorgasbord of choice.  The primitive will be very disappointed, and should probably just stay home.

Yeah, there's a very good reason they're called the Badlands.

I read that title and thought he was going to Chicago or Detriot.

A vacation in The Badlands, in January.

A tent should do fine. I'll allow the DUmmie a rain guard. Carbon footprint and all that.

There is a decent sized buffalo herd at the Badlands. Plenty of steaming wild bovine excrement to keep the visiting DUmmies warm.

That building contains the funniest thing in South Dakota, IMO. At the south end of the hallway from the restaurant, past the souvenir shop and clothing store, is a big old mechanical T-Rex in a  mineshaft-looking frame. Four times an hour, his eyes light up, and he comes out of that frame with a wheezy roar. It's like a Jurassic grandfather clock.

It's surreal, because they have a mannequin dressed like George Armstrong Custer right there, which will probably give the Dummy a completely screwed up understanding of the Little Big Horn.

Well then, plenty of dry stuff to burn for the fire. Won't hurt the poor trees and will save the environment.

South Dakota is the only place I have ever had the privilege of taking a shower, primitive style.  I rigged up a bug sprayer to work like a portable shower, and tramped out into the area SW of the primitive campground in the SW corner of the park.  There I hung it from one of the few trees out there, and proceeded to the first shower I was able to take in at least three days.

As I was soaping up, a few members of that herd strolled into the lowland area about 75 yards away from me.  I'm not accustomed to bison, so I'm not sure if a scraggly ass-naked white dude enjoying a shower and a shave while standing on the crest of a hill would be of interest to them, but it didn't appear to be so.  They left me alone, and I left them alone, and all was well.
