Why must smart = elitist?

 Frankly, I've had enough of the anti-brains campaigns pushed by the right-wing nuts. They painted Kerry and Gore that way and now they're doing it to Obama. Jealous? Since I like to think I have an IQ above my shoe size, does that make me "elitist" or is it the fact that I just think (and thanks to the DU I have come to think more often)?

Any ideas?

Gore...Kerry ?  :lmao:

1. I don't think it is 'smart' I think they are referring to education
 Look at bush, he has a degree and is dumb as rocks but thinks he is smart because a piece of paper tells him he is

55. I don't agree. There's been a concerted anti-intellecutalism effort afoot for many years now.
 Bush and his cronies are just profiting from that. So, in a way they really are smart because they've convinced people to dumb themselves down enough for them to run off with the whole gravy train.

57. Reminds me a lot of the tyranny of the jocks in HS
 You know, not the all-around athlete/scholar types. But the ones who had nothing more than some athletic ability, and used it to bully those who actually worked at their studies, or were curious about the world.

60. Yes. I was thinking the exact same thing when I read the OP. It's really sickening when you think
 about it. A whole country/society that simply refuses to grow up.

4. They arent afraid of smart people
 They're afraid of people smart enough to tell the truth.

Those get labeled elitists.

5. They represent people who are willfully and proudly ignorant.
 They are offended by people who either are smart or try to learn. Everything to them is about people trying to be better than they are. Speaking "fancy," to them is just showing off.

This is why Bush purposely mispronounces nuclear, so they can hear it and see people make fun of it. It is way past time we stop pandering to the ignorant in this country

OK, So how many of the DUmmies could even fix a flat on their bicycle?

OK, so that's a bad example. You don't even need to use tools these days to fix bicycle flats.

its apparent to me that the Dummies aren't all that swift themselves - the way they compare apples to oranges and call the results pears.

Yet they don`t understand what the definition of "crime" is...they have no idea how economics work....they do not understand that we have real enemies in the world.

They live in a bubble of greed and jealousy that expects all their wishes and dreams to be provided apart from responsibility ( free sex and drug use ) with a mentality of a 5 year old.

I wish they would get out of my world and indeed try to make it on their own but they can`t and never will.

smart<>elitist

smart=Conservative

dumb=voting for someone whose only qualification is his skin color

elitist=contempt for those who are the unwashed masses -- like the colored community. And idiot liberals.

elitist = asshole

Stop behaving like an over-educated know-it-all asshole, and people will stop accusing you of being an elitist.  Saying something positive about the United States (for a change) would help you imensely.

The dumbest people I know (or taught) were ones registered Democrat. Being a free thinker doesn't necessarily make you smart, and believing what others also believe doesn't necessarily make you stupid.

Once again, the DUmmies prove that many, if not all of them, rode the short bus to school.

The problem isn't that you people are so smart the rest of us are jealous...the problem is your elitism causes you to BELIEVE you're intellectually superior. There is more than one kind of intelligence. Just because one can read (and semi-understand or quote from) Finnegan's Wake or Mein Kampf doesn't mean one has a lick of sense. Just because one has taken all the recreational drugs known to man doesn't make one street smart. Being afraid to say something politically incorrect doesn't make one able to understand what real struggle is. Empathy (regardless of whether you're encouraging your 4 year old to cry over every little thing) is a kind of intelligence that requires one to focus on the needs of others. One can mouth "house the homeless", "poor children need more", "gays should be able to marry" but as long as one is unwilling to open one's own home (imagine all the homeless who would have shelter if every DUmmie would just take a couple in), feed and clothe the "poor" children in your neighborhoods, and stop using "bet he's gay" as the biggest insult you think you can make against Republicans, you can't even claim the most basic understanding of your fellow humans. Being against the war doesn't make you smart either, it means you have a different OPINION than others who support it. My son has an Arabic teacher from Iraq. Her family lives there. She's traveled around the world and has a PhD, speaks Arabic and English fluently...I'd say she pretty much qualifies as "smart" and she supports the war. Lastly, scoring high on an IQ test isn't the same as having wisdom. I'll take "street smart" and wise over a liberal arts degree any day of the week (before anyone gets their panties in a wad, I was a lit major and DO read Finnegan's Wake...it doesn't get more liberal artsy than that).

Simply being smart doesn't make one an elitist.  I'm a pretty smart fellah myself, but I'm also aware that the odds are that any random person who can, for example, prove that there exists an everywhere-continuous, nowhere differebtiable real-valued function is almost certainly worth less to society than any random person who can't (being that the kind of geeks who get off on Real Analysis are very smart and very useless, and being one of those geeks myself).

Being smart and realistic is possible.  Its only those who think that their intelligence makes them better people - not better for a specific purpose, but better overall - who are elitists.  That would fit you DUmmies to a tee, if only you were a tenth as intelligent as you think you are.  As it is, you're only wanna-be elitists.

I dare anyone of the DUmbasses to get an engineering or hard science degree.

That is all.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

They were born with that. Don't believe me?. Just ask them. They know everything.
