I had to go to Ilion NY for my job about 6 weeks ago, and the village leadership told me that Remington is looking to add 400 positions there. Seems that their move of some firearms manufacturing to their plants in the South hasn't worked out as well for them as they hoped, and they're looking at bringing some back to the PRNY.
I expect it has a lot to do with tax breaks, NY has been giving out huge tax deals to get manufacturing industries back into the state...not that they've cut back any of their spending, so it's pretty much on the backs of all the existing taxpayers. Since American corporations are by and large unable to look beyond five years in their ROI analysis decisions, and the deals are for up to ten years, it has a short-term appeal to both the incumbent government and the corporations, but in a large sense just rolls the snowball further up the hill, from which it will inevitably descend.
