2. You have to wonder how often that happens nationwide
Hard core NRA members in clerical positions could very easily "overlook" failed background checks and "accidentally" OK an arms sale. If there is no systemic oversight ...
Trying to fend off some logical implications of this F-up:
* The "system" is susceptible to human error;
* This failure was one where existing laws would have precluded the perp from getting the gun;
* More stringent laws would not have done any better, as they would have failed for the same reason;
* Existing laws are sufficiently onerous that the law enforcement and bureaucrat types doing the processing find it complicated;
IOW, simplification, not further complication, would have a greater chance of screw-up prevention.LisaL (26,000 posts)
14. Maybe FBI should be allowed more than 3 days to investigate.
The investigator wasn't able to obtain what she needed within the allotted three day period. That seems like a huge loophole.
IIRC, the current time limit - is it really 3 days? - was enacted because some anti-gun and lazy bureaucrats had been making the approval process indefinite. Somehow Congress managed to act to end that abuse. 3 days is too short? Really? The gun dealer collects the ID info and it is electronically transmitted to the Feds' computer. The computer checks its records. A paper-pusher looks over the results. The checking process from transmission of data through "printing" the results (whether on paper or a "soft copy" displayed on a computer monitor probably takes less than 3 minutes (computers work 24 X 7 X 52; as for paper pushers, think swing and grave shift, and flexible schedules). Depending on how much detail the paper-pusher looks at:
* The approval of a simple (= no arrests for anything ever) application should take less than three minutes;
* The denial of a felon's application should take less than three minutes;
* The denial of a loony-toon's application might take 6 minutes;
* The approval or denial of the application of some one with a complicated history might take 20 or 30 minutes, maybe 180 minutes if paper-pusher takes a lunch break.
3 days is easily adequate. But adequate time for a proper background check isn't what Libs and Progs want. Since they can't ban guns outright - though they will keep trying - they will do whatever they can to make obtaining a gun and buying ammo difficult, time-consuming, and expensive. So, if LisaL gets her wish, and the time limit is extended to 3 weeks, she will still complain that it's too short.
