You first. I insist. :-)
-
We used to hit K-Mart and get a couple of cans of this before heading out on camping trips way back in the dinosaur days.
Even with my effed up stomach right now I am psyched! :-)
-
That's interesting food to be sure!
So how do you prepare it?
-
It's already cooked and drained.
Just heat it up if you want, or eat it right out of the can.
My colon just flinched.
-
Even with my effed up stomach right now I am psyched! :-)
My stomach is fully operational right now and I wouldn't go near that stuff.
But then again, my idea of camping is staying at a Motel 6 and getting Chinese take-out. :-)
-
Is it crispy or soggy? I am game for just about anything but soggy bacon grosses me out.

When it arrives I will crack a can open and post the results!
I suspect it is like the precooked bacon strips that you get at the grocery store and needs a little "Crisping" in the pan.

I've got a P-38 on my key ring.

-
Dixie, your P38 appears to have a crack on it!! I've had one on my key ring for a couple or three decades.
Let's see....... 9 oz/ can times 12 cans = 108 OUNCES/16= 6.75 Lbs.
109.95 + 12.12 for shipping = 122.07. 122.07 divided by 6.75 lbs= 18.085 per pound!!! That's some SPENDY bacon!!!!!

H5 for that. :-)

Hey, don't knock the new ones. I bought a couple of cases for emergencies and just for shits and giggles tried one a month or so ago. Not bad, actually. Just make sure you get the post-1995 ones, of course.

Dayum. You can get a case of MRE's for way less than that.

Look at it the other way...
Between 2-3/4 and 3-1/4 pounds of raw bacon go into each can. This gets you between 35-40 cooked and drained slices of bacon. Before shipping that comes to a little over 9$ per can.
Raw bacon... 5-6$ for a 2 pound uncooked package that will yield 22-25 slices. Or 3-4$ for less than a pound that will yield you 11-14 slices.
Plus the canned stuff has a decade long shelf life. (You can add 4-5 years to that if kept at a cooler holding temp such as we have in our basement store room.)
Keep in mind this is for camping and for long term storage for emergencies. And when you have a Bacon Emergency you need help STAT! ;)

80$ right now for current issue military MRE's plus 35$ shipping.
A-Pack civilian MRE meals run 60-65$ case with the 30-35$ shipping and have less durable packaging and shorter shelf lives.

yum! I love bacon. I like to put bacon on my bacon. :-)
-
I fail to see why a person couldn't fry up their own bacon and can it themselves. I CAN see why it would last 10 years with all of the nitrates and such in it... ::)

Good. My arteries just closed up another mm in anticipation.

Killjoy! ;)

My Dad swiped a couple of cans of bacon from the USAF (For which he worked) when I was a kid, it was solid slices with no paper separating them, all stood on end...I think it was from aircraft survival rations, excessed due to shelf date coming up, but sidelined by him instead. Quite tasty!
:cheersmate:

First impressions...
Better than the pre-cooked bacon from the grocery store. Very toothsome without an excessively salty taste or overpowering smoked flavor.
Perfect consistancy for BLT's right out of the can. Crisps up in 30 seconds in the microwave.
The processing got rid of almost all of the grease, just trace amounts on the waxed paper.
Quality 9/10.(Strips could be just a TAD thicker.)
Convienience 6/10. (Some of the strips will invariably tear a little when seperating them.)

Even with your review, I'm not sure I'm gonna be jumping at the chance to buy some of this...
-
Well there were 12 cans in each case. Having opened and eaten 10 out of one of them, I will report in a few days about the digestive considerations involved here.
Also does anyone know what it means when your vision tunnels down and everything looks red and you can hear your heartbeat pounding away louder than the TV? Wierd!
;)

I only like my bacon by itself. I don't like bacon in anything except a BLT. That being said, Can-O-Bacon sounds gag worthy. :puke:
