How can we find a way to get together? Reserve a table? (http://members.socket.net/~mcruzan/avatars/shrug.gif)

We could meet by one of the vendor booths (http://www.baconfestkc.com/Vendors), I guess.
I've still got Eupher's phone number from his trip through here last September but that is the only one I have.

I have Big Dog's and Eupher's... I am still waiting on my friend, who is stationed in Kabul, to see if he will be back in time...

I haven't heard if any ladies of the cave were going. I was thinking about driving down to Branson, to surprise my stepdaughter...

That would be nice.

Checking the rates now, for airplanes, hmmmmmmmm. what about the train??
Amtrak is expensive. Don't take the bus or you'll wind up on a rolling Wal-Mart like I did on my trip to Huntsville.
You could always fly into Nashville and catch a ride with me. I'm leaving Thursday afternoon. I think St. Louis has a decent airport too.
-

Forget trains. If you fly into Branson, I can pick you up and you can go up to KC with me. Branson is just east of Shell Knob on US76.

No, the ticket for the Baconfest. Better get yours before they sell out.
There's a $10 discount if you buy it online and the price goes up another $10 in August.

How far is the ride from Nashvile to Ksc
-
Eight hours, but I was going to stop in Paducah or St. Louis overnight. I'm leaving Thursday after work (my office is only five minutes from the airport).
I've heard airfare is cheaper at certain airports. I guess you have some options.
-
let me think, is anyone heading down to Branson, MO?
-
I will be going on my way back. I'm taking the whole week off.
We could sneak into BattleHymn's house on the way by. :-)
-
Shell Knob is about 45 minutes from Branson, and about 3 hours from KC. If anybody wants to fly into Branson, I can pick them up and take them along to the 'fest.......
-
I'd sure like to join you all!
But I cannot, so have a Bacon Bloody Mary (or a virgin version) on me!

If I can drive to Nashville from where I live in 7 hours, so can you (going the other direction, natcherly). (Well, I drive a car. I'm not sure what you're driving these days. :lmao: )
Stay at my house. Lotsa room. Rent's cheap.

I'll be there.

I'll be there, but Mrs. marv has to tend our 4 pup "animal farm".
We have to select a meetup place. I'll wear my brand-new, store-bought, yellow "Don't Tread On Me" tee. And I'll try to remember to bring my camera.

I'm 50/50 right now. Waiting to hear if I either get the promotion and transfer at work or if I get an actual job offer from the railroad. First one makes it more likely I'll make it since I'll be working normal hours again. Second one would make it iffy.

Finally got around to buying my ticket. Mrs. E is NOT coming, so all pretense of decorum is now IN THE SHITTER!!!! Eleventy111!1 (Within reason and the bounds of the law, of course.) :fuelfire:  :-)
Oh yeah, PM'd Big Dog with my cell number. I should be darkening the gate area by about 10 AM, maybe a hair or two later.

Arthur Bryant's is still there. 1727 Brooklyn Ave, in the heart of Kansas City's "Little Monaco", the finest, most gentrified neighborhood anywhere!
:-)
Want to have lunch there?

That sounds great.
When I worked at the Federal Reserve (it used to be at 9th and Walnut), we did lunches and parties there. I take it that the neighborhood is still pretty much the same as it was 40 years ago.....(http://www.conservativecave.com/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif).....As an Air Force buddy used to say, "Ya gotta move at all levels."

Yup. 17 and Crooklyn hasn't changed much. Best to be out of range before the sun goes down.
But it's fine at lunchtime. The street demons are still in bed.

I'm sure we could handle that. Arthur Bryants (http://www.arthurbryantsbbq.com/index.htm) is famous nationwide, ain't no better. You might want to try their burnt ends. The menu (http://www.arthurbryantsbbq.com/our_restaurants/brooklyn/menu.htm). (http://members.socket.net/~mcruzan/avatars/yum.gif)

Thinking of having coffee at The Roasterie (1204 W. 27th St, KCMO) at 10. It will be a better location for sit-and-jaw. Then lunch at Arthur Bryant's, then BaconFest.

You've got a point. Kansas City, KS is a little more difficult to navigate than Kansas City, MO, especially to someone not familiar with the metropolitan area.

I'm coming in from the east along I-70, so according to Google maps, I bail out onto I-670 westbound, south on I-35 one or two exits, and hang a right onto 27th St. It's still on the MO side.
But yeah, I'm not real fond of driving through that area. Pretty crazy most of the time.

You're right. When I GOOGLEd it, the map showed it on the Kansas side, and I went with that. But 1204 W. 27th St, would make it in the 12 hundred block west of Main St. on the Missouri side.
That makes it kwell........
So we meet at The Roasterie at 10am for coffee, and zip over to Bryants for BBQ, and on to BACONFEST.....(http://www.conservativecave.com/Smileys/default/yahoo.gif)

My Little Pony?
I'm headed out in about an hour. I'll be at Eupher's in time for dinner.
Not sure when you left, but it's almost 9 PM and you still haven't darkened my doorway (supposed to have been here 2 hours ago). Broke down somewhere? A phone call would be nice.
-
Damn traffic.

Damn traffic.
I am just glad, you arrived safely!!!

Yeah, okay, you got in. Two hours late (traffic, rain, and construction.) No gang-rapes in E. St. Louis.
-
Yeah, okay, you got in. Two hours late (traffic, rain, and construction.) No gang-rapes in E. St. Louis.
Oh for the love....

You sound disappointed.
I almost stopped at Busch Stadium for a look-see. I might have to stop at the brewery on my way back. I saw a couple of interesting places in Illinois, too.

I sure wish I was joining youze guys.

Have a great time my friend!! Hey, can you have a bacon wrapped scallop for me?? thanks!!

I didn't get a whole lot of pictures and those I have, I have no way to get off my phone without a USB cable.
No, I didn't do a very good job planning this. But I don't care, I'm on vacation.

We stopped here for lunch. It was crowded and busy, and marv did a bunch of shopping. :-)
-

I don't recall at the moment... history museums, gun collections, I think there was at least one auto show going on.
Speaking of billboards, I there there may be more per capita in Missourri than any other state I've been in. They all seem to be for casinos, strip clubs, and smut shops.
-
At 3 PM it was 100 degrees. Definitely hotter than the hinges of hell. Lots of people enjoying bacon and beer. A pretty decent blues band (hey, that's KC for you, right?), but the heat drove us out early.
Just too friggin' hot.
Pictures to come.

There were four of us:
Chris_
Big Dog
marv
Eupher
We started out at the Roasterie, sort of a new yuppie joint in the middle of the old stockyard section of Kansas City, MO. The clientele of the Roasterie were well-to-do yuppie types. The neighborhood definitely something other than that. Big Dog says to avoid this area at night. But we were here during the late morning:
An interesting conversation piece on top of the Roasterie. It looks like a full-sized copy of a Douglas DC-3 airplane.

marv was there in his Tea Party T-shirt.
Chris_ had had a bad night, evidently, and was sweltering in the already oppressive heat:
Big Dog got there before anybody else and gave us a rundown on the joint and the local history.
After a cup of joe, we adjourned to the bbq joint. Apparently a well-known joint.
Chris_ was in a far better mood by this time. Musta been the coffee.

Good stuff baconfest cavers.
-
I really like funnel cakes, but I think my stomach would have turned inside out if I treid to eat one standing under the sun in 100-degree heat.
It was interesting and definitely makes me want to try some stuff in the kitchen when I get home. Right after I replace my busted glasses.

pics loom great!!
I have seen pics of Big Dog, Chris, and Euph,
Hey Marv...great shirt!! you stand out!! :-)
-
Gentlemen,
It was a real pleasure to spend the day with you.
-
Looks like you guys had a great time...wish Tots and I could have been there...
-
I used to fly in to KC about once a month when I was out at the Pentagon. I guest lectured at Leavenworth for CGSC for a couple of years. The best BBQ on the planet, IMHO, with one exception;
A little road side stand otuside of Atterbury, Indiana had the absolute best pulled pork I have ever had.
Looks like you guys had a great time.
-
You guys sure must have had a great time, wish I had been there. I'll make BLT's tomorrow and pretend. I can live vicariously. :rotf:
What was the funniest/strangest bacon item you saw? What was the best tasting bacon item you had?
-
Well, I gotta get in here somehow. It was a typical hot August for Kansas City. But what I'd planned as a three hour drive from Shell Knob turned into four hours. Some pretty serious fog got in the way though. (Your message was on the recorder when I got home, Big Dog.)
By the time I got to KC for the coffee, I could hardly walk. Then four hours up, and four hours back still equaled eight hours confined behind the wheel. Oh well!
But I did get one pic:
Chris, Big Dog, and Eupher having coffee. I was the ugly guy behind the camera.
I say this publicly for all to know; Chris, Big Dog and Eupher are are some of the finest folks I've met, and I've seen many sunrises on many hot August days in KC. I wish I could put up a sound track of applause for these guys for what they've contributed to the Cave.

Adult company is hard to come by these days so appreciate it when you find it.
BTW, my wife will sleep in her new BaconFest tee tonight!
-

What happened? you get into a fight, someone try to take your maple smoked bacon wrapped bacon? You giv'em what for? They said it was in a bad part of town.
-
Great pictures. It's heartwarming to see all of you together.
The only caver I know in real life is BadCat. We celebrate "brothel fest" and there are no pictures.
Many people on this board and on CU I feel like I know in real life. Heck I have not even met Evil Conservative in person and she lives close to me. I drive by her sub division all the time. I know her neighbors.
Who is the guy in the red hat with the man purse? :fuelfire:
Was there any interesting bacon ideas? Bacon bloody marys? Chocolate covered bacon? Anything crazy and out of this world? Did you see any hippies?
-
Who is the guy in the red hat with the man purse? :fuelfire:
Why, that would be me. :-)
I don't normally carry a fag bag, but when in KC, go with the flow I always say. :lmao:
(I have a video camera and a still camera, with all the requisite gear inside.)
Speaking for myself, I was pretty well stuffed from the plate full of rib ends that I'd eaten at Bryants. Definitely not very hungry, and the heat made things a little less appetizing. Nevertheless, there was one interesting thing I did try -- bacon crumbles on top of a brittle type of concoction with chocolate sauce over the top. Not bad at all!
-
Now that I am rehydrated, moderately well rested, and lightly caffeinated...
Riding out into the sunrise. Hanging out with Marv, Eupher, and Chris; talking about life and solving the world's problems over coffee (the best coffee in town). Kansas City's best barbecue. Bacon. Pretty gals eating bacon in the summer sun. Seeing a couple of old acquaintances at the Festival. Live blues. Ice cream and cigar with Moose on the ride home. Riding into the setting sun. Bourbon back at the homestead.
It doesn't get much better than that.
Favorite bacon delights: I liked the bacon puff pastries, and the little crisp dessert things that Eupher talked about. Dulce de leche flavored frozen yogurt with crumbled bacon. Maple bacon cupcakes. Angels on horseback (bacon wrapped scallops)- I didn't see Devils on Horseback (shrimp)
Farmland had two tents side by side with "samples" (think "all you can eat") of their different bacons. AmeriStar Casino had a beer tent with their 5 varieties of craft brew, and a voting contest: "Best beer to have with bacon".
Did I mention "pretty gals eating bacon in the summer sun"? Ooooh, yeah.
I'll be back.
-
A little road side stand otuside of Atterbury, Indiana had the absolute best pulled pork I have ever had.
I think I know the place you're talking about. A little red shack, south of Franklin on the east side of the road. I had brisket.
-
(http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/Eupher6/Baconfest/DSCF0595_zps284d0511.jpg)
Marv and I attracted a bit of attention with the Gadsden Flags. Everyone was very nice- I got three or four "likes" at the Bacon Festival.
-
Did you see any hippies?
Hippie chicks; hipster guys; bikers; yummy mummies; girls out on the town; college students; suburban couples; the 2nd runner up in Kansas City's "Best Beard" competition and his lovely wife (his prize was 2 tickets, which he preferred to a plaque); and us.
White, black, Indian (woo-woo, not red dot), Asian, straight, and not-so-much. But not a burkha in the bunch, and no sign of PETA.
-
Looks like you guys had a great time...wish Tots and I could have been there...
Yeah, and y'all could have picked me up on the way there, too!! :-)

-
You know, if we DID go, we wouldn't have any other choice, would we?
I want you and I, and any others who can make it, in addition to the pioneers who made it this year to go next year. It would be even more awesome !
-
A couple of other items of note:
The BaconFest has a pretty steep entry ticket - $40 for general admission (with a $10 discount if you get it early) and $100 for the VIP thing.
The VIP deal gets you an air-conditioned room in which you can beat the heat; porcelain on which you can get rid of what you just ate and drank. The general admission ticket gets you no air conditioning and porta-potties.
The tradeoff is, you get all the food you can stuff down your gullet and all the beer you can in moderation drink and all the water you can hydrate yourself with when the beer has run its course. None of that crap of buying extra tickets to redeem for your bacon-wrapped delectable.
-
Good to see y'all had a great time... :cheersmate:
I have to admit...it's hard for me to like anything in 100 degree heat, unless I am floating in a pool. :(
-
We should have waited a few hours for lunch to digest. Plodding around a crowded parking lot with a full stomach wasn't particularly enjoyable.
-
Why, that would be me. :-)

Anybody see the bacon roll thing some guy made on Fox & Friends this morning?
Ground sausage stuffed with crispy chopped bacon and BBQ sauce, rolled up with a lattice bacon wrap around it. Smoked? grilled? then sliced and more BBQ sauce poured over it and served on a bun.
Thought the Fox guy taste testing it was going to "swoon" with his first bite..
For some reason, watching him made me think of several of you here.. :whistling:
