Title: Velvet
Post by: Big Dog on November 26, 2012, 07:37:15 PM
Back in August, I visited International Hearing Dog,  Inc. (http://www.conservativecave.com/index.php/topic,75134.msg926065.html#msg926065) I met a cute little black dog who was beginning her training. She ran to me and snoosed up my shirt kissing me. I was sure that little black dog wanted me to take her home that day.

In the months since, I e-mailed back and forth with IHDI.  We talked about several dogs, but none of them fit the bill until today. The director sent me an e-mail and pictures of a dog who was finishing the first stage of training- obedience and basic hearing dog stuff- and what did I think?

This is Velvet, a Black Lab/Border Collie mix:

The best part is, Velvet is that same black dog who adopted me back in August!

Now I am working on checking all of the blocks the Army, MEDCOM, Ft Riley, and the hospital requires for Service Dogs.

I didn't have to click your reference link, because I remembered the story.   :-)  I hope it all works out for you and Velvet.

That is one cute little pooch!!! So you are trying to let them to allow you to take her to work with you??  That would be tres awesome.!! :yahoo: :yahoo: As long as she is a certified hearing dog, it should be okay, I think...

She is pretty, but she's not a pet. Velvet is a working girl.  :-)

The Army is service animal friendly, but there are several steps to go through. My workplace complicates things, being a healthcare facility. I also had to develop a process to notify clients that I have a dog in the office, because some people are allergic, have compromised immune systems, or are afraid of dogs. I am working with two offices from Big Army, three offices on Ft Riley, and four offices within the hospital.

A beautiful working girl!

I once had a German Shepherd who really, really should have gotten a job in the police dept or something.  I kept feeling that he was wasting his talents, just being a pet.  He was fiercely handsome, and could have really kept some DUmmies in line.

Border collie and shepherd mix -- hoo-boy, you're looking at a LOT of smarts!

She's gonna be a challenge to keep occupied, especially if she's a high-energy dog (which I would suspect).

Best of luck with her, BD, and I'm glad that the stars and planets aligned for you and Velvet. She seems like she'll be a great dog.  :cheersmate:

My wife fell in love with Velvet.

I'm running into that at the hospital, too.

I had to lay down the law, that Velvet will not be a mascot or cuddle-buddy. She'll be there to work.

I don't think it will help.  :-)

Best thing you can do for her.  My granddog's biggest problem is boredom & lack of attention.

Lots of hoops for you to through, educating others on the fact that this is not a PET but a working dog whose whole live is You and your welfare. Sort of a Velcro dog that is at your side 24/7.   You will become conjoined twins.

Free Paws. com has all the laws involved under the ADA tell you your rights and obligations to have a service dog, bone up on the Federal Laws and don't be afraid to speak your piece when the need comes.

Darn near got my head ripped off by this obese woman and 3 perhaps year old child in a Doctors waiting room, woman came in with her seeing eye dog.  Dog found her an empty seat.   This child from hell came roaring over yelling dogie, dogie, Like she had never seen a dog before. I was seated perhaps 6 seats from the woman and dog, and the child threw itself on the dog, I got up and removed the child and told her this was not a dog to play with.    The huge mother bear got up and demanded to know what right I had pulling her child off the dog.

The blind woman had little idea what was going on and sat frozen in her seat.   The child was pitching a full out fit as the terrable 3's do and the woman was called next---thank heaven.

Not the child's fault, the fault of the mother that had no idea of the concept of a service dog, these are not pets these dogs work 24/7, they are as vital as crutches, wheelchairs and oxygen tanks of those with Copd.

Educate others on the need you have for Black Velvet, educate others on the need Velvet has for a job in her life time.     BTW, I just looked to see a bottle of Black Velvet in the cabinet and will when I take a drink will think of you and your wonderful new life together.

UPDATE: I completed the Army approval process. IHDI plans to send Velvet and the trainer here the first part of February, but I asked them to come sooner because I have TDY in February. The signs are up around my building and my office, and I already have people poking their head into my office to see "our dog".

UPDATE 2: A friend offered me a different Hearing Dog if I want to take immediate possession:

I'm conflicted. It looks like the old girl may need a hearing dog of her own!

Velvet is here!

The trainers brought her over this afternoon. We're getting to know each other. Country life is a big change for her.

So far, we had a small  accident on the rug, went outside about two dozen times, sniffed out the rabbit holes in the back yard, smoked a cigar, and played tug-of-war with a rope toy. She's asleep on the fleece I put down beside my big chair.

We begin training tomorrow morning.

Congratulations, BD! It sounds like she's off to a great start. Uh, I'm assuming that it was YOU who smoked the cigar - not her. I'd think she might find it hard to handle anyway, and lighting the thing/clipping the end/whatever ceremony you cigar smokers have - well, she might need some help with that.   :-)

I enjoyed the cigar. She's a non-smoker.

She'll learn the cutting and lighting. Being a service dog, I'll expect her to earn her keep.  :-)

Slight thread hi-jack:

We have 3 dogs and 3 parrots. You'd think that that wouldn't be an ideal combination of animals, but believe me, the birds have the dogs terrified, especially my eclectus. When that birds flutters over to the couch, EVERYBODY, including Mrs E, bails out!  :lmao:

That bird thinks of that couch as her own nesting area and she tolerates nobody on it but me. Makes it handy when it's time to stretch out for a snooze.... :evillaugh:

I'm kind of like your wife....afraid of big dogs, particularly German shepherds. Though I really really like Labs and Great Danes.

I've had 4 Westies though, and would have another in a heartbeat, but other half thinks dogs only belong outside, and I think they belong inside. It's been an ongoing battle for years and until he realizes that dogs in his prior "lifetime" weren't properly trained, there won't be any more dogs here.

We do have 3 cats, and he suggested the other day we go to the shelter and get another one.  :o  This from the man, who 19 years ago when we started dating, detested cats!

Most dogs belong inside with their pack of people.   Some breeds do need to be outside, but most are miserable being apart from their loved ones, US.

Southern idea, dogs in the barn, people in the house did not indear me to my ex  MIL that put my taco dog outside and the poor thing got a rip snorting skin problem from the grass and bugs. Hell of a mess for the poor thing, back was close to open soures when we got home after only one day away.   One does not tie out a dog the size of a small cat in the country, darn a big bird could have eaten him all up.

I have have had BIG dogs, Rotties, a St. Bernard and a Shepard with enough land for them to run about.  after they bounced about and did what ever they needed to do, they were in 30 minutes or less back at the door wanting to come in and check us all out, keep an eye on us. This is their job, to watch over us, they cannot do that chained up to a dog house in the back yard.

My new  hubby raised in tenements in the city never had a dog and when we met he was not a dog lover.   Behind his back I got another Taco dog, weighed about a pound and Hubby was aghast until the little fella climbed into his shirt and went to sleep on his chest.  Next thing I knew Hubby had the dog in his pocket or his lap, dog slept over his pillow and -----I no longer had a dog, HE did.

Just as one trains children, husbands and dogs is much alike.   A well trained dog is a Joy, a well trained child is a Joy, a well mannered husband is precious.

I was not feeling the love last night. Fortunately Velvet was patient with me. Here in the Flint Hills, it's always windy. Last night, when the temperature dropped into the teens, the wind chill was around -5...hundred. Velvet kept signaling that she wanted to go outside. I figured she had to poop. About a dozen times between 5:00 pm and 10:00, I put on my Carharts and took her out back. No poop. I swear, her butt was frozen shut. I can't blame her, really. I wouldn't want to hang my ass out in that weather.  Finally, she pooped and we were able to call it a night.

This morning, we went to Ft Riley Veterinary Services for her inspection (everything was good to go), then we went to the hospital and my office for awhile. She was really excited at first, but she calmed down and put her game face on. She was great. We made a trip to the PX and the food court (She sat quietly while I had Popeye's), and the commissary. Smooth as buttermilk.

After we got home, I treated her to some playtime with her new favorite toy (a sock monkey) and a hairbrushing. She's asleep on the pad beside my chair. She earned it. Hell, I earned it, too.

Velvet will become a Velcro dog for you, trained or not.   Keep the bathroom door open as if you close the door the door the dog will go nuts.     Both our baths  doors had to be replaced as our dogs scratched the heck out of them trying to get in and watch as we showered or sat on the Pot.

You will get use to seeing Velvet watching ever move you make, our cats and dogs do this, one gets use to having an audience when you poop.

A hearty AMEN!!! I adore dogs, I really do. What other pet has such loyalty and unconditional love. I had seven dogs at one time and took care of them all. We haven't had a dog for years because of Dylan  had a central line with TPN (liquid food thru his veins). Something about pet hair maybe getting into the line. But he no longer has it.

At the hospital they would bring in therapy dogs and we found out he loves dogs too and he loves my mom's Bichon. After we get settled in SC I hope to get a hearing ear dog for him. Dogs are truly a girls best friend!  :-)

P.S.Velvet is a beautiful name.

Update: After the first week, we are a good team. She has done very well at home, at work, in noisy social settings, at stores, in restaurants and coffee shops, and while we're driving. I'm really glad she's here.

BD, I know she is your working dog, but how does that play in affection and stuff?  I mean, do you have to keep your distance, because you are her job, or is she treated like a regular pet?  Forgive me if that question sounds dunce-like?  I just don't know what the protocol is.

Our close friend's daughter is totally deaf. Her corgi alerts her to door knocks or bells, and some other things. That corgi is truly a loving pet that loves to play and roughhouse with other people.

I would think like a voice command, or when he picks up a certain dog toy, like her ball or sock monkey would signal playtime....

Great question! Velvet is a very affectionate dog. She's asleep at my feet right now. She shares my big chair and ottoman with me when I'm writing on my laptop or watching a movie. She also staked out a quarter of my bed as her space. I wouldn't want it any other way.

Affection is very important with a service dog, just as important as discipline. I treat Velvet like a member of the family, with all the love a regular pet would get, but she still has responsibilities and obedience. We train each day, which is just playing with treats for rewards, as far as she is concerned.

I don't know if you noticed, but your cat has demon eyes.

It's red eye photo syndrome. It doesn't exist outside of photos. I will admit that he is a strange cat. This is our first pure breed cat. He will only eat one specific type of dry cat food. It's not an expensive type but it must be a specific brand. He will not dring milk or eat cheese, meat, fish, etc. He will sniff at it and that is it. He likes to drink water while it trickles out of the bathtub faucet. I need to figure out how to post that video.

I've never gotten anywhere in life on my looks. But, as Red Green says, "If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy." I get no complaints.

:-)

She's sound asleep on the floor; she earned the rest. I had back-to-back appointments at work, so she worked all day. We threw the ball out on the lawn at breaks and lunchtime. We went to the Commissary after work, and she got a lot of attention. There had to be 20 carts in line for the checkout, and Velvet was perfectly behaved as we waited in line.

DOG TOYS

Velvet loves dog toys. Loves to destroy them, that is.

In one month she eviscerated two sock monkeys (after pulling off their ears); ripped open a tubular fetch toy; tore the hide off a heavy-duty tennis ball toy; and chewed the squeaker out of a squeaky bone.

Today I bought Dogzilla, a "heavy duty" toy. The package really played up Dogzilla as the best toy for destructo-dogs, so I lay down my nine bucks and brought it home.

It lasted nine minutes. A dollar a minute.

Dogzilla. Pfffft.

But the destruction of Dogzilla was offset by our other dog toy adventure. A woman I work with, who is an avowed compulsive shopper, brought a bag of dog toys and treats for Velvet. She bought the toys for her own dog, but it wisely refused to feed her compulsion by playing with the toys.

This thing was in the bag of toys:

I pulled it out of the bag, held it upright, looked at it for a minute, waved it around a little, and said, "This doesn't look like a dog toy. Did you mean to give Velvet your Punisher 2000?"

I raised one eyebrow and wiggled the Punisher. She laughed and blushed; I can't say which she did more.

We have had good luck with Hartz Dura Play (http://www.hartz.com/Hartz_Products/Dog_Products/Toys/Toss_and_Retrieves.aspx) toys.  Other than that , my wife has made some home made ones using cotton balls and denim from old jeans.  Just put in a few of those little squeaker things and our Beagle likes them.

We take our pup to the pet store and wander about and let her choose what interests her, no sense buying a toy she has no interest in.    Best thing she likes are these beef marrow bones, Vet tells me they keep her teeth clean, down side is I have to cut back on food for a few days as she will gain weight from the marrow.

Another down side is she will sneak them inside and hide them in our bed under the pillows.  If we do not find them she will awaken us by in the middle of the night to retrieve the bone and crunch crunch it driving us nuts.   Price is they are expensive, almost $3.00 a pound.    It may be cheaper to go to local Butcher store and have the meat cutters saw up some bones for us.

Side note, a Crafty friend asked me to save the cleaned out bones for her.  She covers them with Polymer clay and turns them into candle stick holders.  Some of her work is amazing, after the bone and clay has been baked she takes the lids from canned foods, those removed from the cans with a opener that cuts from the side, glues them to the bottom of the bone and clay and paints everything.   Then she stencils on to the product, or Mod Podges on little pictures she cuts out of old NGO magazines.  She makes good money with these damn chewed up bones. Artists can turn a dirty diaper into something someone somewhere will buy.

I asked her once if she could bronze a good specimen of my dogs poop, she told me she had had stranger requests before.

My Aussie draws and quarters any stuffed toy and rips apart any of those braided tug-of-war ropes in minutes too.  She's ok with the plastic squeaky toys -- her favorite is a large pink donut (looks like the ones Homer eats).

I was awarded the Achievement Medal for Civilian Service. I think the Commander had an extra one lying around, and decided to give it to the first person he saw outside his window. I took Velvet outside to take care of her business, and viola'!

Where's Velvets medal, seems as a civilian worker she deserves one too. After all she is on duty 24/7.

BTW, you have not given us enough information on how Velvet does her job.  How and when she alerts you to different situations, is she like a seeing eye dog that will alert you to the sound of a hidden car coming at you ?????   What happens if someone is trying to get in at night when you are asleep, will she alert you to someone coming up behind you ?

Comands do you use both voice and hand signals, such amazing and wonderful gifts from God.

A bunch of ^^^^^^5's to the remarkable people that train these Velcro dogs.

This is something most of us will never get to experience, fascinating really, sort of like having an guarding angle beside you or a personal slave.

One reasonably assumes well, but one hopes for an interesting anecdote or two, too.

UPDATE: Velvet continues to do well. She really settled down around children out in public; the time we spent at the PX, Commissary, and the mall have really paid off.

Moose, Red, Velvet, and I went out for dinner this evening at the local Red Lobster. The waitress, bless her heart, brought me a Braille menu! We laughed. To her credit, she also brought a bowl of water for Velvet when I asked for it (not every restaurant will do that).

A former service dog is staying with us for the weekend while his mommy (a neighbor) goes on vacation.  He's big compared to Scrappy, and a spoiled little boy.  He's gone downstairs twice and gobbled up all the cat's food, destroyed a couple of the cat's toys, and loves hanging out in the kitchen when dinner is being prepared.

That tail is vicious.  Watch out, or he'll knock over your beer.

Darn it! Velvet blends into the background and we can't see her very well.

The other day at the grocery store, there was a fellow with a golden retriever comanion dog. It was the best dog and very friendly. It didn't get hyper and still stayed by his person the whole time.

Service dogs have to put up with a lot of people - usually kids - grabbing and pulling and dumping on them. They're trained to take all that stuff in stride.

They are wonderful animals.

Both are great breeds. The Lab is big and friendly. The border collie is smear, fast, and a good worker--if you find the proper job for them to do. It must involve their herding instinct. She obviously herds you around. :-)

Velvet earned her pay again today.

My company recently moved into a new building, which is actually the frame of an older building which was gutted and rebuilt. The building is still under construction, but we're working out of it. We have had a variety of Bobcats, trenchers, powered scaffolds, asphalt trucks, et al around the building.

Velvet and I walked out the front door this morning. We turned right at the sidewalk, and she stopped. She planted her feet, raised her ears, and looked up. I started to look up as I stopped with her, and saw a shape passing right in front of us into my field of vision.

The sign company was moving an iron frame from the back of a boom truck parked on the street to set in two holes in the ground - moving it without a ground guide, I should add. The iron frame was about 5 feet long and 4 feet tall, and I am sure it would have hit me in the head if Velvet hadn't alerted me.

After I praised Velvet, I had a word with the guy running the boom. Actually, I had several words, beginning with "What in the **** is wrong with you?"  I think he got the picture.

Last week, Red and I took care of her granddaughters' 8 week old Chihuahua puppy, Sophie. Velvet had a great time playing with her. Sophie bounced up to Velvet and ran headfirst into her feet; Velvet just cocked her head to one side and looked down at the ornery little shit.

Some new pictures:

We went to a bar for a bourbon and live music. It was supposed to be Bluegrass night, but the singer was a whiny emo-folk type, and her guitar was probably out of tune. Velvet wedged herself in a corner with her ears down. I turned my hearing aid off during the first song, drank my bourbon expeditiously, and we left during the second song.

Going for coffee one evening (owebumazombie knows this coffee house), Velvet charmed a kid at the next table- behind my back. I turned around and found this:

We had a few rough days here at the Doghouse.

Velvet had some kind of intestinal bug, and had diarrhea on and off from Wednesday evening until 2:00 this morning. We left work early Thursday, took leave time in the middle of the day on Friday, and stayed home this weekend.  Neither of us got much rest over the past 4 nights.

She drank plenty of water, but still got dehydrated. I cooked rice with chicken broth, mixed it in with her food, and kept her on half rations. She had three baths in 4 days, which didn't do anything to help her mood either. To her great credit, she only made a mess in the house once, on Wednesday night, because she lost control before she could wake me up. She was really upset, but it was OK.

Today is a day of rest, and we'll go for a drive with the windows down this afternoon. She should be good as new in a couple of days.

Glad to hear Velvet's on the mend. No dog likes to be sick, and no dog likes to lose control of bowels. They're just not wired that way.

When I walk my 3 dogs, Lexie, our alpha, tends to latch onto the most disgusting things she can (until I wrestle it out of her mouth -- ugh).

I'm constantly amazed she doesn't have every intestinal bug on the planet.

I never was able to understand a dog's sense of smell.
Depending on breed dogs can smell up to 1,000 times better than a human.
As a human(purportedly) I smell disgusting smells that are revulsive.
But my dogs smell the same smell 1,000 times more potently and not only are they not repulsed by it, they love it, they splendor in it, they revel in it.
