Title: Hey Movie Buff!
Post by: Karin on June 11, 2012, 10:35:04 AM
Remember when I told you I unpacked a coupla never-seen MST3K DVDs?  I wanted to wait to watch them when I had the house to myself, as this is "my" kind of humor.

So, husband calls me on Sat nite, he's out with friends, and he's decided to spend the night at a buddy's house.  I say, "fine, have fun."   :yahoo: :cheersmate:  I ensconsed myself with plenty of bev and popcorn, and popped in....."Santa Claus Conquers the Martians!"

I laughed from start to finish, and had a great time.  The one thing that kept running through my mind was, "how can grown men don these costumes, with those helmets with the goofy bee antennas and vacuum cleaner hoses attached to the side, with a cape for the top dude, and then look at themselves in the mirror the next day?"   :lmao:   Especially the top dude, with his frowny lines between the eyebrows, acting all serious.   :rotf:

I was particularly frightened when Santa Claus makes the Martian children all of a sudden erupt in maniacal laughter, with seemingly no input or cause.  It looked like a loony bin, through and through, populated with children.  Crazy stuff!

Hooray for Santy Claus!  And watch out for snakes!

I love MST3K!  My favorites are Soylent Green and Jack Frost.

The absolute funniest one I've seen recently is The Giant Spider Invasion -- a complete scream from beginning to end AND it has the Skipper in it from Gilligan's Island!

I never got into the mystery science theatre, literally or figuratively.

I liked Joel more than Mike.  I couldn't get used to the switch.

I saw that one! I remember how these two low-level scientists, out of nowhere, just come to the conclusion that "of course it's a rip in the fabric of spacetime!" caused by a black hole that's letting these spiders in. Sure, I'd always conclude that right away!  First thing that comes to my mind.

Then there were all the MN vs WI jokes.....

You know what?  They didn't.  My bad.  One of my favorite lines from MST3K is when they scream "Soylent Green is people!"  That prompted me to watch the original movie.

Randomly calling out GO PACKERS or CHEEZHEADS RULE every couple of minutes   :rotf:  Too funny!!

I am squarely in the Mike camp.

One of my favorite ones, I can't even remember the name.  It's from the early 80's, in space.  The captain looks like Santa Claus, and his daughter looks like a middle-aged aerobics instructor.  Oh, there's so many awful ones it's hard to pick a fave.  The spider one with The Skipper was a good one.  Is that the one with the trashy dame who's got the shakes?

Great to hear you liked it, Karin!
That was one of my favorites.
The space one whose name you can't remember in which the ship's captain looks like Santa Claus was called 'Space Mutiny.' That, too, is one of my favorites (It's the first of the Syfy ones I saw, and one of the few in which literally every character is pretty much begging to be riffed).
As for my thoughts on the Joel vs. Mike debate, I believe I said in one of my reviews that I think Joel was slightly better at doing host segments, whereas Mike was a slightly better riffer, though I of course think they're both great in general.
btw, Karin, as long as I have your attention, did you read the thread I posted a while back about possibly doing a mini- series of reviews of the 'Spider- Man' and 'Batman' films next month? What would you think of that (I ask because you seemed to be the biggest fan of my movie reviews)?

:hammer:  You're almost one week late to this party.  Couldn't decide what to wear?   :-)

Thanks for the title.

I'm not a huge devotee of superhero movies, except I did like Spider Man, and Iron Man.  I'm one of the few people who just could not get into Dark Knight.  Everything looked so dark on my TV, I couldn't see what the hell was going on.  So, while I'd probably read the review, I don't know as I'd comment.  You could throw one up and see if it sticks.

As an apology for being so late to comment on this thread, I'll do you one better than giving you the title, I'll give you a link to the episode itself:

The absolute funniest one I've seen recently is The Giant Spider Invasion -- a complete scream from beginning to end AND it has the Skipper in it from Gilligan's Island!
And it was filmed in Wisconsin. And probably answers the question as to why Wisconsin doesn't have a thriving film industry.  Too many giant spiders wrecking the sets and getting in the shots.

Space Mutiny, filmed in an old factory in South Africa. That's the movie where the "flight officer" was back at work after being killed.

The Giant Spider Invasion. The woman was Barbara Hale, Perry Mason's secretary, but not married to Alan Hale Jr.- the Skipper. The "giant spider" was so funny- it looked like a VW Beetle with legs!

Rosie Greer used to co star with Fess Parker. Trivia question, what was one of Rosie Greer's favorite past times ?

I remember when the Giant Spider Invasion came out. I wanted to see it so bad!

I even had this dream about these spiders falling from the sky and my sister in the dream made spider coat by placing them in those moth ball things that hung in closets.

What was the flick & (male) character with the wierd thighs that became a fixture on the show for a while?

The movie was 'Manos: The Hands of Fate.' Widely considered the single worst motion picture ever made, so it made fo a memorable episode of MST3K, and they'll actually be revisiting it in just a couple months for the live movie theater event 'Manos: The Hands of Fate.' The character with the weid thighs was named Torgo (btw, the actor who played him committed suicide shortly after filming wrapped).

I meant to say that the MST3K crew will be revisiting that abomination of a movie in a couple months in the one- night live theater event "Rifftrax Live: Manos: The Hands of Fate."

I didn't know Torgo offed himself!  That's too bad.  He always made me laugh at the very end, when Manos sets Torgo's hand on fire, and he gets up and skips merrily off set.  Gotta go!

That always made me laugh every time in Space Mutiny, seeing the dead guy back at the controls.  Oh, and remember the gocart races?  I would be laughing constantly through the whole thing, no matter how many times I'd seen it.

Eagah:  Remember the shaving cream scene, when he tries to lap it up with his big gooey tongue?  Ewwww.  That was gross with the dad and daughter relationship, just a little too cozy.  It was rumored that the actors were having an affair.

Even worse that Arch Hall, Jr. his real-life son, played her boyfriend. She cozied up to her "dad", sat on his lap, and shaved him- and kissed Arch Jr. like she was his sister.
