NOTICE: Due to privacy concerns, and Facebook's plan to sell everyone's information to others, I have deactivated my account tonight.
-
How do you do that? Its not very obvious.
-
Deactivating does not delete your account. Just an FYI.
My cousin "deletes" her FB every other month. She magically reappears with her whole profile and pictures a week or two later.
-
I don't post anything hardly at all anymore.
I hate Timeline.

I hate Timeline.
I just read the newsfeed, so the timeline doesn't bother me too much.
-
I haven't jumped on the facebook bandwagon yet.

My brother tried to delete everything only to find out nothing disappeared. He finally gave up. We just don't post anything important...mostly use it to share family pictures.
-
Do not fill out the info section (work, school etc.); do not like ridiculous pages which are just spam companies collecting your info; do not use your regular email address to open the account.
The best thing about facebook is when you are a country girl lost in the big city you can check in to find out what your exact location is. :)

I thought I was the only one who didn't have a Facebook account.

I don't, and neither does my wife.
-
I don't either. I didn't know about all that info creeping back, when you try to delete it. That's disturbing.

I know that. You have to CANCEL your account.
-
How do you do that? Its not very obvious.
Click on the arrow at the top of the right side of the screen, select account settings, click on the security icon on the left-hand side, click on delete.
You are presented with two choices. DELETE account or CANCEL account. Select the one you want, then answer a question or two, and you should be gone from there.
-
I cancelled mine over a year ago when someone hacked into it and started sending messages out pretending to be me. :censored:
-
I've never had any problems with Facebook. As far as them selling my info, Google does too. Google actually tracks my info. Recently, I had to reformat my PC. I did a couple of web searches on something I searched BEFORE I reformatted it and Google still had the link as purple (showing I'd been to that link before). I was like, "WTH?!?!?!?" It has worked to my benefit, though. Many websites sell personal info, even internet vendors and also credit card companies. I'm just very careful as to what info I put on Facebook. Just remember, if you don't want it on the internet, don't post it ANYWHERE!!!
For those who don't like the timeline, there's a Facebook add-on called, "Social Optimizer". It's makes FB appear more like the old Facebook.
-
I have FB. Not cancelling it unless I know something is very wrong. If people wanna find me, they'll find me. I've probably put too much info on the net over the years, but never gave FB my Credit card number, or SSN, or pertinent info like that, so I should be good.
-
I have to say this in support of Facebook; it has allowed me to get back in touch with old shipmates, team mates, co-workers & school friends. I must admit that this fact, in itself, is a great benefit of Facebook.

I've seen that bullshit Timeline and think it's just about the cheesiest setup imagineable. And the REALLY cheesy part is, Zuckerberg and his gang of thugs are forever trying to push it on you.
I DON'T WANT THE DAMNED THING, ZUCKERBERG. WORRY ABOUT YOUR F'N IPO, NOT MY *@#$%^@ TIMELINE, YA SCHMUCK!
And I concur about the power of FB. Unbelievable how many people I know who simply fell out of the woodwork right in my lap.
-
I don't notice timeline because I use the news feed only. It's very rare that I go to someone's profile. I have groups set up and just use that to scroll through updates.

I love Facebook....Making contacts with old friends, and classmates, and making new ones along the way...

I keep thinking it will be a fad, like the pet rock, the CB craze, and the cellphone. Well the cellphone's probably not a good example, but the beeper ?

MySpace has nearly shriveled up and blown away. You never hear of it anymore.

An omen of things to come ?

I think that Facebook will be around for a long while. It beats pay sites like Classmates.com. I just wish they'd quit trying to fix things that aren't broken and focus on the things that are, like security. I switched to the timeline back in December. It doesn't bother me much now, but I did prefer the old interface.

If one is concerned about Facebook selling or gathering information - there's a remarkably simple solution.
Don't give it any.
My FB profile contains very little information about me beyond my location that's not public domain in the first place.
I use it mostly for photosharing - none of which are geotagged , and keeping in touch with people I don't get to see face to face or through IM regularly.
-
FB is also a bullet proof place to save pictures. I've gone through two 'puters and when I need to find some old pics there they are. And I could care less if they sell my info or can see me through my web cam. Beware of what you see you cyber spies. Enter at your own risk.

A while ago, I read that Facebook had one major advantage over MySpace & that is that Facebook doesn't include geotagging or any other metadata on the posted pics.
LC, same here. I use a throw-away email account for Facebook. No phone numbers or my real email are used. I give just as much info as I want and it's been fine by me. No hackers, compromises, etc. I AM surprised shocked by the amount of info some people put on Facebook.

I have a couple of friends who put their entire addresses on Facebook. I could give all of them a visit whenever they go out of town for a week and clean them out. It's that bad. They will learn a lesson when it's too late.

The reason for it becuase of all the spam you got from Myspace. There was no security like it is with facebook. The main reason I quit using myspace was because I was getting spam messages from people who don't even know me wanting me to get on their webcam, or check out there "Personal" site. Plus I got about 50 pm's a day from people claiming to be responding to my sent pm to them. On top of that, people would fill their pages with stupid stuff that caused the browser to either crash, or take an hour load. Oh, I was also getting about 50 friend request aday from people who I don't know, and wanted to show me what they got. I checked some of the profiles out and these people were idiots ranging porn star wannabes to gaster thug wannabes. It was a joke.
With facebook I don't accept anyone unless I know them, and it is easier to make it where only friends see your page or info. Which is how I have it set up. I also don't have my phone number, are street address on facebook. I only tell limited information.

I still have a myspace account and use it for what it was originally intended for, music. New music acts use to upload songs and videos that could be downloaded and it was a good way to get free music that wasn't being pushed by the major labels.

You and me both. And I never will. Or with Twitter, or any of that stuff. It just leads to problems. Did you see that South Park where it's Stan v Facebook?
http://www.southparkstudios.com/full-episodes/s14e04-you-have-0-friends
I soooooooo empathized with Stan that episode. Online "Social Networking" is just---stupid. It's too generic. Bosses can demand your username and password. And look how you can't even get rid of an account! That's insane. Happy I've had nothing to do with that. I'm on LinkedIn because it's necessary for me, but that's as far as I'll go.
Actually I saw my first South Park just this year. Up to this time I never paid any attention to the show. Then I saw this episode and was hooked.

Yeah, in that regard it was o.k. But when it came to all the spam you got (I started to call it spamspace), it just got ridiculous.

What about a merger of myspace, and facebook...myface.

You have been corrupted, my friend! :-)
Randy: Hey Stan, my computer says we're not friends anymore.
Stan: My Facebook profile went rogue, dad. Had to go into the circuitry and do battle with it. I sent all my friends somewhere else.
Randy: Okay, so we're not friends then?
Stan: F**k off dad.

(edgy throaty whisper).....This looks like a job for the cuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun...
by the way, did I see you at Coon-a-Con 2012 at the NY LaGuardia Airport Marriott? I was the one with the racoon ears, getting The Coon's autograph. You were the one with the domino/bandit mask, I think...I guess it's hard to be sure.
We are all The Coon. Darkness is our cloak, the city envelops us....

Carlos, Seahorse, I simply have too many irons in the fire right now. My wife is there, though, and she posts things that are sometimes useful to both of us.
Thanks, though! The people here (most of them, except the trolls) are and will always be my friends, though! :yahoo:
