I don't want to hear you crying about 4 inches of snow ever again. There was more than that on the roads when I drove to work this morning. Roads had yet to be plowed, exits not plowed, etc. Nice sheet of frozen slush/ice under the snow.
We're getting another foot on top and 50 mph gusts right now.
-
Yeah, but YOUR state, county, city, whatever has snowplows. Big Difference & f'n wahhhhhhh
And yes, I'll be the first to admit that Texans CANNOT drive in the snow... ('cept me, that is)

....and me too.
When I was in high school (1962) I had a 22 mile paper route. Some main roads, back roads and dirt roads. I never failed to deliver the paper early (by 5 am) regardless of the weather.....even that time there was 3" of clear ice on the roads (and I used no chains). You could see the white line through the ice. Snow plows wouldn't have been worth a dime that week. Ice picks, chisels and slave labor might have worked.
-
Pennsylvania can't drive on a clear, sunny day. So snow was no big deal there. Here in Virgina, if someone wakes up to see a crystal on their window, everything closes and they just avoid the problem alltogether.
-
I just got word from the higher authority....I got to take her to work. She ain't driving on this stuff.
I was out yesterday and the main roads were clear so that means I only got about 5 miles of ice to cover....round trip.
-

And all those plows don't mean shit when you're driving to work at 5 am and none of them are out yet. I hit the ditch once coming in. Thank God for 4WD.
Oh, and Texans can't drive, PERIOD. I base that on my experience with them as a kid in NM and CO.
-
Sparky I think we are already over the high prediction of 16 inches, and we have a day of snowfall yet to come. You won't be getting into your driveway when you get home tonight.

At least I'm not the only one saying that :lmao:

We spent a few years in El Paso and I remember once getting 2 inches of snow and they practically shut the city down.
Now that I've been in NY for so long I would be terrified to drive in the snow with Texans again LOL People who lived up north should be given little stickers that let ONLY them go out on the roads. :)
-
We have lots of hills and curves with the the edge of the road being a dropoff that can be a long way to bottom. Not only do the side roads and subdivisions not get plowed out, the sun is usually bright enough to melt the top layer of snow. Add cars driving on top of the slight melt, and it all turns to solid ice.
I learned to drive in Northern Illinois in the winter. It's the idiots who have never driven in snow, have a pickup truck or a Jeep Wrangler that go out and drive like maniacs, that are a danger to someone who does know how to drive in snow.
No one drives well on ice.
Sparky, saw on the Weather Channel at 9 that the snow you are getting is so heavy it's bringing trees and wires down up where you are. Be careful, and hoping you are able to get home safely.
-
No one drives well on ice.
Yup. What you said. Snow, I will take. Ice is a different story entirely. Black Ice coupled with the fact that all of our highway system seems to be above ground, at least in the metroplex, and add to that a whole mess of people from all over God and Creation that say they know how to drive in icy conditions, and well you have a big ole bunch of cluster-F. In addition, we have virtually NO Sand/Salt/Ice cure trucks, and what we do have concentrates on maybe 5% of the bridges that require it. Heck, I don't even think we HAVE snowplows.
With that being said, I hope you don't have the same crap happen again Sparky, like a year or so ago, that looked really really bad.

We had 20+ accidents here, yesterday morning in less than an hour, because all of a sudden we had a combination of ice pellets and snow fall. Right at the end of rush hour. :( News just came on now, and said there is black ice everywhere in the area because our temps are dropping again. We've already had our high, and now at 25 with a chill of 14. News said last night that the county's almost out of salt, not that the roads around me would get any. :argh:

That is what happens around this area too. I sure hope you guys find more salt. It's too early in the year to run out.
-
I've been out all morning in it. Had to go to Home Depot this AM. Busted a water line last night. Pipe didn't freeze, the coupling gave out.
Snow is no problem. I have a 3/4 PU 4X4 and a Blazer 4X4. Eat you heart out liberals. If I hit you, there won't be enough left to put in a thimble.
-
I'm back from taking her highness to work...went one way and came back another....the roads are fine except the one I live on.
-

Supposed to be some coming in. We were out after the last storm too, and they got 3500 tons in, and it's almost gone. They are also using a "brine" that they are coating the roads with in between storms that seems to be helping some on the main roads, as the snow falls. Some of the surrounding counties have had their schools closed for 5 straight weeks!!! 2 weeks of Christmas, the rest because of snow! Today's the 3rd day for my county's schools to be out. Doubtful they will be going the rest of the week, since it's going to be too cold to melt any of the ice. They have 3 more "snow days"...then the school year will either get extended or the kids will go to school on Saturdays. We usually don't get "winter weather" until later this month and February. :(
-
We've even had alot of it down here in the "non-plateau" area
-
Pennsylvania can't drive on a clear, sunny day.
Especially when they're Shoobies heading east to the Shore . . . :censored: :banghead:

Local channels just started the scroll on the bottom of the screen for tomorrow's school closings. Some are already announcing that they will be closed on Friday too.
Snow in the area, with more coming across the plateau.... :bawl:

Lemme know next time you're sweating your balls off in a 90 degree heat wave while I'm enjoying the sun with a beer at 100 degrees on my boat.

For a ptarmigan, they like snow. Heck, ptarmigans think -20F is too warm. :-)

What is this snow of which you speak? And if it is so bad why do they let it get on the roads?

Yep---this old fart is a wimp. Moved from Michigan, to southern Florida...So I've had both ..... northern snow, ice and cold, then heat and humidity. Now in AL, not alot of snow, but ice underneath on top of roads through hills and around sharp curves. Now just employ the retired old fart law ------ make sure enough coffee and throw another log on the fire and watch the world go by...................................................

Pretty much any July/August. Probably also be the days I'll either do the exciter (doghouse, steam turbine) or the pipe chase (right now in there it's 110 degrees. Imagine it during the summer.)

You asking for Thor and Dutch? It's okay, you can tell us if they put you up to it.

Sorry...can't tell...I promised.
However, I have been asked to get pictures if possible. It's a quality control issue.

Can't be much worse than opening up an oven that is at 775 degrees and pulling a stator weighing 1/2 ton out and having to work on it.

That's the worst of our job, the rest isn't so bad. I do go through quite a few pairs of welder's gloves.

Well when snow becomes the norm down here, and we are well equipped (snow plowers, snow tires, etc.) then we can talk. AND furthermore, we didn't get snow. We got freakin' ice. BIG DIFFERENCE!! So there.

We get ice as well. Matter of fact, IIRC in the 2008 ice storm we got over an INCH of it. Got to the point where I was afraid to walk from my house to the road because branches and some pretty good sized chunks were falling once it started warming up later that day and the wind REALLY kicked up.
And for the record--the NH DOT has less than 800 plows. NYC has over 2000. Look at the road mileage involved and tell me why NYC took over a week to clear their streets and NH roads (and in towns, most of the side streets) are clear within a DAY. That's right--the roads here were wet, but cleared of snow and ice less than 12 hours after the snow stopped.
ETA: Nice to see you back, BTW.

haha thanks!! I had to jump in on this one!! :p
