'there will be some coastal texas town that just won't exist on Sunday.  the storm surge is projected to be 30% higher than Katrina, and we saw what happened to the mississippi gulf coast.

I pray to God those people all left.

If it's anything like after Rita, my family will be able to go back in a few days to check things out, but not to stay.  They were up here for 2 weeks before going home.

Well, I'm sitting here looking across the golf course to the lake.  We have some moderate winds starting to come out of the east with the south starting to get a little darker.  The lake is still pretty flat and I look across a piece of lake that is approximately 2 miles wide so when the wind picks up it starts getting white caps pretty quickly.

I don't think we are going to start seeing the real stuff until about 3 am.  I am in San Jacinto county (if you care to google it) on Lake Livingston.  This should be fun!  I don't think this is going to be anywhere NEAR what Rita was to our area.  They are still showing this storm to be at 105 mph.  While that is a lot of wind it isn't near what Rita was coming in.

I'll try to log in once in awhile and let y'all know what is going on here.  We are about 70 miles north of Houston so Servo will be seeing this a few hours earlier than I will.

the slosh models of the storm surge have actually improved somewhat.  as noted in the old thread, this is
a worst case scenario;  it's a huge storm pushing a lot of water, and it will hit just south of galveston bay,
bays and harbors amplify the magnitude of the storm surge, and, finally, it will hit at approximately high tide.

I will try to stay in touch.  I expect our power to go out sometime in the mid morning.  It may go out sooner than that though ... our power is fed to this area out of Beaumont.

If I think about it I may run up to my office and get my digi cam so I can take pictures as it all goes down.  When we went through Rita I kept saying I wish I had brought the camera home.  I could have gotten some great pictures as the lake washed up over an 8' bulkhead onto the 14th tee box.  It was absolutely awesome.

Well then you have driven right by my place.  When you are on the 'Big Bridge' on 190 before you get to Onalaska I am about 3 miles north of that bridge on the west side of the lake.  I'm fixing to upload some pics ... hopefully I will be able to find this thread later and update these pics.  I just went to my office and got my digi cam.

The prediction is for 50-60 MPH winds and about 6" of rain for Casa de Undies tomorrow.  I pray for my BIG tree, my new roof, and my elderly fences.  I trust the power will be out,  We'll see.

I live in a 500 year flood plain.  The last flood was around 1835.  I'm good for another 327 years.

The jet stream trough is moving eastwardly faster than forecasted. It'l' be good for shear and keeping it away from downtown Houston and Galveston Bay.

i don't think it will nail galveston bay.  I think it will hit at least a few miles north, and just enough to
spare galveston bay a disaster.

now, for the towns and cities in extreme north coastal texas, and even LA . . .

The coffee-table-sized atlas here is from 1936.

I know where Houston, Galveston, Dallas, Fort Worth, El Paso, Nuevo Laredo, and Amarillo are; I have a rough idea in the head where Austin, Texarkana, San Antonio, and Corpus Christi are.

But names such as Tyler or Irving or Denton ring no bells.

Are we still describing events in or near Houston and Galveston, or have descriptions of what's going on down there moved further inland, like towards Dallas?

Thanks, sir.

You know of course I'm not seeing any of this on television.

I'm seeing only words on the computer screen.

I appreciate it.

I figured when you asked that question you weren't watching TV.  Google maps can be a huge help in finding the towns.

I have another question for someone.  Because we are getting so much coverage of Ike, and have been for several days, I have no idea where Josephine is.  Can someone tell me what that storm is doing?

Denton is north of Dallas, some 50 miles. I'm in Denison, (Also North of Dallas, but East of Denton),  myself. Depending on which model one looks at, Ike may come right up this way. Worst case, we'll get some wind and rain. Forecast are for 30-50 mph winds when Ike comes up here.

As of 30 minutes ago, Pt Arthur still has electricity.  My aunt's friend (and her husband and two kids) stayed behind.  The friend is very scared.  The storm surge will go over their sea wall, since it's only 14 feet tall.  My family is worried about their houses.

Yeah, my cousin, Leah, has a friend that stayed behind in Bridge City and he's scared.  He's been texting her constantly and sending her pictures.  There's already been some flooding in Bridge City (most of my family lives in Bridge City, the other part lives in Port Arthur - Pt Acres specifically).

The good thing is tonight I really talked with Leah for the first time ever.  She's a nice girl, she's only 21.  She's always been too young really for me to chat with much in the past.

My Aunt Freida (the one that had the kidney surgery) and was only released from the hospital two weeks ago, is doing well.  She's tired, but making it.

MSNBC is talking about Sabine Pass, near Pt Arthur, the water is going well over what Rita did already.

This is definitely not looking good for Pt Arthur.

Frank, Sabine Pass is directly SE of Houston, right on the coast and Pt Arthur is directly north of that.  Driving, it takes an hour and a half from Houston to be in Pt Arthur.

Bye, Ike.  The sun shines again.

Some wind.  Some rain.  One broken limb that was dead anyway.  Humidity.

I thought the run on the local stores was funny.  It reminded me of when sleet is predicted.  People act they will be socked in for days without any hope or provisions.

No weather around here lasts more than a day.  The "hurricane" lasted only a few hours.  It wasn't any worse than what naturally happens around here anyway when a cold front meets a warm air mass.   We locals call it a thunderstorm.

It's a gorgeously sunny Sunday morning.  The current temp is 68.  It is a beautiful morning to go to church and be thankful for beautiful mornings.

No flooding around my parts.  The creek ain't even full.

Throughout the day, it spent as much time not raining as it did raining.  The wind would dry the sidewalks and streets between periods of rain.

I have bad news to share.  Most of my family's homes have been flooded.

My grandfather's neighborhood was up to the roof line.  One aunt & uncle and cousin (and her family) live in the same neighborhood.  One cousin was in the middle of building a house and currently living in a mobile home and the mobile home is gone.  We do not know how much the house they were building was damaged, but they were supposed to move in, in 2 weeks.  Her sister and two kids lived in the same mobile home park, and obviously their home is gone.

My grandfather's lady friend's house was flooded as well.

Another aunt and uncle, we don't know the level of damage yet.

My aunt and uncle that live in Pt Arthur, their house is okay, no flooding there.

As of now, they know they're going to be up here for 3 weeks at least.  Some of the men will have to go back once the refineries get power and they'll go in to work.

Ike came up here and paid a quick visit, enough to have local flooding and to knock off the power, including ours (about 7 hours). Today comprised of cutting back some of the tree branches that fell on our house.

I think trees have a thing against me. This is the 3rd tree damage thing at this house (and I have been here only 3 years). This time it pulled the gutter away from the house and destroyed a good wrought iron loveseat that I've had for years, part of a set of 2 chairs and a table.

We spent our Sunday shopping at Target for coolers and getting ice and trying to save the food from the freezers. At least we were successful with that mission.

My St. Louis transplants (daughter, S-I-L, kids) are so use to the power going out at their old home, they always assume it will be that way here.  They had their St. Louis generator gassed up and ready to go.  Of course, the lights didn't even flicker.

Just a quick check in.  We have no electric with lots of downed trees.  2 - 4 weeks without power.  I'm working off a generator but we're safe and cleaning up our neck o' the woods!

Y'all be good.

Has anyone heard from Servo?

I'll post pics of our area when I can.  We have lots to do.

If anyone knows of a 480 volt 3 phase generator around the Huntsville area I sure could use one.  I need it to keep our water plant up and running .... otherwise we have to go to a 'Boil Water' phase.  I can't let our water plant shut down.

Thanks!

It looks like we could be down for quite some time.  We have an 850,000 ground storage tank for our water and it should last us to the end of the week.  I really need a generator by Wednesday to avoid being 'at the last minute' to start pumping from our wells.  I don't mind being without at the house but I need to keep the community water up and running.

Tell your family to hang in there!  It'll all get back to normal eventually.

Got an email from my friend, in Houston,  a little while ago.

They have running water now, still not safe to drink ... but they aren't using rain water to flush with anymore.

Their generator is working well, they have checked on the neighbors and all are ok, she's wearing a gun on her hip even in the house.

She said her husband and sons have always made fun of her for going "overboard" for hurricane preparedness.....but they aren't making fun of her anymore.

Her husband works for one of the oil companies, and he's been at work since yesterday, they're trying to get back up to where they are supposed to be.

She wants to try an MRE.....her son thinks she's crazy ....he's done 2 tours in Iraq.

At least they are safe and that's again thing. :cheersmate:

I was under the impression that the storm surge demolished about the southern 1/2 of the barrier islands and the rest was median wind damage across the Houston-metro and other Texas, and far-Western Louisiana, coastal regions.

I am having a tough time getting a clear picture.

Is Galveston pretty much wiped out, like 1900?  Is Houston like NOLA after Katrina, sans people looting their own neighborhoods?

Even with the MSM, I am can't see it.

Google Earth has updated their satellite pictures.

Not to see, but to understand what the hell is going on.

It is all page 3 or page 4 news.  Small articles about this or that but nothing that paints the full and true picture.

Well, Galveston is pretty much gone, but Bolivar Peninsula is completely destroyed.  Actually I heard today that Bolivar Peninsula is actually an island now.  There's no place for the ferry to dock and the road in is completely destroyed.  There's about a dozen or so hold outs on Bolivar (they stayed through the hurricane).  The city is going to go to a judge and have them forcibly removed if they won't leave voluntarily.

Sabine Pass took on more damage than what happened during Rita.

Here's some good sites to go to for pictures of different areas

Port Arthur News (http://www.panews.com)
Beaumont Enterprise (http://www.beaumontenterprise.com)
Houston Chronicle (http://www.chron.com)

They have some pictures on those sites, plus they have a lot of coverage since they're in the effected areas.

No, of course not.  Even when Rita was hitting and doing lots of damage all they would talk about is how it was effecting NOLA.  Well, after Katrina you rarely heard about Mississippi or anywhere in Louisiana that wasn't NOLA.   :whatever:

Fox reported tonight that Bolivar Island (?) near Galveston is mostly destroyed and there are still about 250 people on the island. They have been ordered to leave for their own safety, if they don't, the govenor may invoke Marshall law on the island which they can then be forcefully evacuated. From the pictures I saw which were taken from a helicopter....there just isn't hardly a thing left....it's basically just flat with a lot of puddles and some foundation slabs.

In the midst of all this, it is important to note the damage Ike did beyond Texas too and far more impacting then Katrina. Schools are closed in most of central Ohio again today since power is still out to Columbus metro and many of the suburbs. There is wind damage to buildings and trees. We hit nearly record winds up here and were unprepared since they didn't expect the winds to hold up as they did all the way up north. I really feel for you guys down there having been through Andrew myself and yes, it's very telling the media is shuffling this one way down considering its impact not only on the Texas area, but all the way up into some midwestern states. They said this was outage was worse then the ice storm we had in 2004 and that was bad, but the saving grace here is that our homes are obviously still standing and don't have significant damage and the weather is very mild right now, not getting above the mid-70's and into the 50's at night so cooling and/or heating is unnecessary.

considering the suffering that is happening in TX, now probably isn't the time to debate the relative horrors of different hurricanes, but it would be pretty damn hard to top 1,300 dead in a half dozen states and $80B in damage.

We are still without power on the lake, still have massive trees down, JUST got FEMA aid this morning.

We have been able to keep our water system up (I finally found a generator in Austin that will be delivered tomorrow) so we are not under a boil water notice.

Y'all be good and I'll check in later.

I wasn't debating, only elaborating on a point made by free(I think), having been someone who saw just how damaging and severe the winds were even 1500 miles or so away from the worst impact.

I figured reporting the impact further up aka as SLW has been would be worthwhile considering what free was asking. I'll just shut up now and go back to lurk mode.

Hey, I'm not bitchin! My power only flickered and my kids only missed Monday.  :-) For all my griping about my house being a pita, I gotta give it to her for hanging in there during some of these big storm events without so much of a shingle lost(yet) or a piece of siding(I hope I don't jinx myself). All of our trees have snapped a few big branches, but nothing significant. Same was true during the ice storm, but the winds were bad up here too. Enough so I was surprised and apparently this is a big deal to hear the local news talk of it in terms of historical events.

Now, on to other things...the madrid chicken is so so--I'll put the recipe up...allrecipe has some good modifications on it from the reviewers which I think I'll try to spice it up a bit more. It's a good base though, just needs some kick and maybe some thickening sauce...dang, now I really effed up this thread.  :banghead:

*side note, I do feel for everyone down there...as I said, I've been through Andrew and my mother went through a couple of the storms that went through the carolinas in the 90's. It does indeed suck the big one. I keep praying that those strong willed Texas types made it through some of those very tentative places some decided to stay in*

I had C rations many years ago (obviously)  -- I was in Boy Scouts and we bought them from the Sergeant Supply.  The macaroni and beef (IIRC) was great!  All of it was pretty good.  And when you are hiking 20-25 miles, the light weight is worth any slight flavor issues.

We ate a lot of C Rations when I was with the 82nd Airborne but they had just brought in the MRE's.  We had so many C Rations on base we never got to the MRE's ..... I'll take C Rations any day.  They are easier to use and, from what I've had so far, taste better.

aasdf ... thanks for the warning!  LOL  I haven't seen any breakfast type food but we still have plenty of real food.  It just takes a bit more work to get it cooked and on the table.

Our area should get electricity restored in the next couple of days .... we'll see.  They don't really know but we have power companies from all over the country working here right now.

Yeah, it is a guy who usually does highway work and dirt work but he can't work his crews right now sooooo ...... he is keeping them busy on the end of chainsaws and they are happy.  They have brought in a lot of big equipment to move the really large stuff and they are charging us $400/truck load hauled out.  Not too bad a deal!  We are figuring/estimating around $20,000 for the clean up in our development.

I'm not sure weather I should be scared or excited.

I'm leaning toward excited.  :naughty:

Has anyone heard from Servo?  I have asked this a couple of times but no one has answered.  Hope he is doing well.

Checking in Bud, It's been a hellava week.  Got my power back yesterday,  My Mom has a new picture
window and Moon roof where none existed before.  I am so freaking tired.

Thanks for your concern my Friend.  :cheersmate:

Servo!!  Good to hear from you mi amigo!  Glad you are safe.  If you need anything let me know and I'll do what I can for you.

KC

Thanks Dude, we are okay, a little beat up but not beaten.  One of these days we need to get together
and I'll tell you the story how I escaped the Woodlands Waterway Marriott armed with a Bic Lighter
and a crazy Filipino.

And the beers are on me.  :cheersmate:

Good to hear your safe!

I'm fine Mia, tired more than anything.

Going back thru the thread, I've added your family to my prayers.  :(

Thanks.  Everyone's safe and that's what matters most.

You had us pretty worried -- glad to see that all is reasonably OK and all are hale and whole.

Sorry about the headaches you will have for the damage, but at least you are OK.
