FDA Considers Allowing Blood Donations From Some Gay Men

While the committee did not take a formal vote, some members said they favored changes to the policy that would not threaten the safety of the blood supply. One suggested solution (and the policy of several other countries) would permit donations from men who have gone a year or more without having sex with another man.

Hospitals began testing blood for hepatitis in 1992, so anyone who received a blood transfusion before then is at an increased risk for contracting the disease.

"The blood bank community has looked at the data and feels they can scientifically and medically support the change," said Dr. Toby Simon, senior medical director of the CSL Behring.

"Even if this leads to one or two cases of HIV infection, that's not acceptable," said Kenrad Nelson, a professor of epidemiology, international health and medicine at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions.

Whether the deferral is due to hepatitis or having lived in certain parts of the world, the "bans" are to prevent infecting recipients, not some arbitrary prejudice. My Dad got hepatitis "courtesy" of infected blood. He lived, but was ineligible to donate for the last 35 or 40 years of his life. And one of my adult children lives in a part of the world that will have her in deferral status for at least a year or two after she returns to the States. So I'm not speaking from ignorance or prejudice in this.

All other problems aside, gay men lie like rugs about their sexual histories to suit their mood or motivation of the moment.  Nothing good can possibly come of this stupidity.

The more diseases Obama can import or cause to become more numerous the more the wealth gets spread around(removed from your pocket) and the more we'll need government healthcare.
