You know, that's my friend Doc's biggest character flaw.

Doc is typical of many of those of his same background, who desperately seek to be "assimilated," to be "accepted" by the American mainstream--even if it means hanging with people who hate those of Hebraic derivation, anti-Semites.

They want s-o-o-o-o-o-o badly to be "assimilated."

What Doc doesn't see is that he's already assimilated, already accepted.

Geezuz gawd, he's part of the Main Line crowd, Philadelphia high society.  He hangs around with the Cadawalladers, rather than the lower-ranking Cadawaladers.  His wife is involved with the right debutante balls, the right cotillions, the right charities; the ones that count.

And he probably has a permanent suite at Grossinger's in the Catskills, where people who matter, vacation and sport.

I can't see where one can be more assimilated than that; he's far more assimilated into the mainstream than goy white Anglo-Saxon Gentile franksolich can ever hope to be.

The Main Line?? My girlfriend's family is from the Main Line, and also from the same religious background.  I wonder if they run in the same circles.

Back in the Old Country, from pre-medieval times clear up until the bloody socialist revolutions of the early 1900s, in the societies of those of Hebraic derivation, learning was highly prized, and undertaken just for the sake of.....learning.

To be rich in knowledge but poor in material goods was considered praiseworthy.

Of course, that was an ideal attained by only a few; reality dictates that most people have to toil and sweat for a living, work to get things.  But even those who became wealthy admired the spartan ascetic scholars for their seeming spiritual virtue.

When they emigrated to America in large numbers beginning during the 1880s, such overeducated men (they were usually always male) presented problems in this new place; they possessed no skills with which to earn a living, and so their wives had to do all the heavy lifting, both raising the children and bringing home the bacon.

It was about this time the matriarchial aspect of American Judaism evolved.

My good friend Doc's father was apparently born circa 1900-1925, and likely would've been part of that culture; learning only for the sake of learning, and working--reluctantly--in a menial job.

That my good friend Doc didn't grow up in a stable two-parent family is news to me--thanks, Tess--as I always had the contrary impression.  My good friend Doc doesn't exhibit the same sorts of burning resentment and rage that other primitives, most notably Skippy, growing up without their fathers, exhibit.

That does, at the same time, explain my good friend Doc's intense yearning to "belong."

Well now, the world in which my good friend Doc's father grew up was in a world totally different from ours.  He was probably born in America, but his parents in eastern Europe--and so the father was perhaps heavily influenced by the Old Country.

For example:

Shtetls (Yiddish: שטעטל, shtetl (singular), שטעטלעך, shtetlekh (plural)) were small towns with large Jewish population which existed in Central and Eastern Europe before the Holocaust. Shtetls were mainly found in the areas which constituted the 19th century Pale of Settlement in the Russian Empire, the Congress Kingdom of Poland, Galicia and Romania. In Yiddish, a larger city, like Lemberg (Lviv) or Czernowitz, was called a shtot (Yiddish: שטאָט, German: Stadt); a village was called a dorf.

In the shtetls, the better a teacher was, the less he was paid.

The idea being that he got so much joy out of teaching, it more than made up for what he was paid.

 About these advertisementswas when this RW MFer came in to my reception area laughing about John McCain's remark about Chelsea. To say the least, I was not amused...he just thought it was about the greatest thing he'd ever heard and I told him in no uncertain terms that I didn't care about 'patient abandonment' issues, if he didn't apologize to my staff, the people in my waiting room who were forced to listen to this crap, and to me, he could leave. He thought I was bluffing and said, "You wouldn't want to lose me." I suppose he figured that since I tell an occasional off-color joke or two, that I would 'get' the humor. I replied that I had a young daughter who was herself at an awkward age, and that if there is some sick guy who thinks that making fun of children gives him a hard-on, I for one, don't want to be associated with that person in any way, shape, or form. That it was lower than low and had nothing to with 'politics' and had everything to do with perversion.

At which point I took his x-rays, made a copy of his treatment records, handed them to him and said..."Good luck to you." Turned around and walked away. I never saw him again. Of course, the people in the waiting room, not only cheered, but I must have gotten 15 referrals directly from that incident. You can't buy that kind of goodwill.

I will not give an inch this time around...not one. I will concede nothing and in the words of Eliot Ness: "No deals".

You're right about the similarities between my good friend Doc and the mad nihilist Skippy.  Doc was born in 1953, Skippy in 1957.  Both have professional degrees, Doc in dentistry and Skippy in engineering.  They're both almost exactly the same height and build, and wear the same size shoes--the difference being Doc knows haberdashery, while Skippy doesn't.

The anglicized version of Doc's last name is "Wallace," although he uses the Polish version.
