I got nailed by the New York State Police doing 98 in a 55 when I was 17 . . . driving my mother's Dodge Aspen station wagon with the 225-cid straight-6 in it. The Troopers said (after they had calmed down), "You were going downhill, and probably had a tailwind (Saint's note--obviously busting my balls! I didn't say anything.). But you did slow down to 81." So they put 90 on the ticket . . . Needless to say, my parents were . . . "not amused." (More along the lines of "batshit livid.")
I've been pulled over since then, and I always have the same drill--interior light on (if at night), hands on the wheel where the LEO can see them, and tell the LEO exactly what I'm going to do before I do it. I've actually been written up maybe half of the time. If you're respectful and comply with the LEO's directions when they are given, they're much more likely to be 'lenient.' (Though, I've heard that the NYSP cannot be 'lenient' any more at the time of the stop--it's up to the DAs, and they rely heavily on the arresting LEO's notes.)
