MGM announced plans to remake two 80's action films at Cannes this weekend. The first, Paul Verhoeven's "Robocop," has long been targeted for remake territory. The second candidate, however, is a new and odd choice for a modern 're-imagining' – 1984's "Red Dawn."
According to The Hollywood Reporter, MGM chiefs Mary Parent and Harry Sloan announced plans to remake the Cold War-era thriller that starred Patrick Swayze and Charlie Sheen.
John Millius' original featured a rag tag bunch of high school jocks banding together to defend their Colorado town as Soviet forces roll in a major scale invasion of the US – they called it "World War 3," I believe. I can't remember what all happened in the movie, 1984 was a long time ago, but I do know that the jocks kicked some commie ass, 1980's style.
So what would a new "Red Dawn" look like? First, could it even be called "Red Dawn" or has the term "red" lost all of its evil import? Would China be the invading force or would we be attacked by Muslim extremists? And most importantly, could they get C Thomas Howell to make a cameo?
Normally I would include a link to The Hollywood Reporter story, to see why I haven't – read this.
