Didn't they say that it's already mutated? There are two different strains of the Virus running rampant in Africa if I remember correctly.
From what I've read, there's
five strains of the little bastard.
From the WHO website:
Bundibugyo ebolavirus (BDBV)
Zaire ebolavirus (EBOV)
Reston ebolavirus (RESTV)
Sudan ebolavirus (SUDV)
Taï Forest ebolavirus (TAFV).
What's killing people in Africa at the moment is the Zaire ebolavirus. Supposedly, it is the most virulent--and fatal--of the five. The Reston (as in Reston, VA, where it first appeared--yes, in the US!) ebolavirus is only fatal to monkeys--it first got going in a research lab in Reston, in 1993. The big fear is that the Zaire strain will mutate and become a hardier, more easily communicable disease (read: airborne). As it stands now, one of the modes of transmission just happens to be
taxicabs, of all things.
I've also seen that there's now an outbreak of ebola in Congo, which may not be connected to the Liberian outbreak. Is it the same strain? Don't know.
