http://www.democraticunderground.com/115745636Oh my.
I've been noticing an encouraging trend in the cooking and baking forum, and it bodes well.
The glassonion primitive, or whatever it is, who was once very active there, but evaporated after dear old sweet Lu took over the operation, running it into the ground because she didn't care, has been injecting new life into the forum.
Maybe the cooking and baking forum's not going to die after all.

What's for Dinner, Sat., Sept. 13, 2014
It will be a crockpot dish, as I have to work this afternoon. Vegetable soup: another Betty Crocker recipe.
Now, you might ask, why am I trying another Betty Crocker recipe? The answer is that the other one actually turned out great. It was fabulous the next day (my five-spice pork soup).
So this one is called Farmer's Market Vegetable Soup. It has parsnips, rutabaga, leeks, a couple Roma tomatoes, spinach, and some orzo (for which I will substitute shirataki noodles). It is supposed to have a potato in it, too, but I won't put that in. Fennel seeds and sage are the herbs.
Already made at 7:30 a.m.: roasted cauliflower and a baking sheet of roasted tomatoes.
When the RG makes something brilliantly, I will write it down and type it up to file in my recipes file on my computer. So this cauliflower recipe was very good. It called for olive oil, garlic, grated green apple, and grated orange rind. The cauliflower was blanched, so it only took 15" to roast in the convection oven.
It was so delicious, I had a bowl for breakfast!
I used a huge amount of basil and garlic on my roasted tomatoes, so suffice to say my kitchen smells heavenly this morning.

1. Guinness Beef Stew and Glazed Bork Belly
Kind of rainy and a bit chilly here on the east coast, so I'm in the mood for some slow cooked comfort food.
On edit: Recipe to follow...

3. We have lost a couple of special guests and picked up one other.
After a few days in Rome with some excellent food, we returned home.
Tonight we had fried, stuffed zucchini flowers, some with anchovies and some without.
Then sausage stuffed eggplants and a salad of fresh greens from my container garden.
Luscious night. We leave in 7 days and I am beginning to grieve.

4. Italian skillet
for lack of a better term...
Hot Italian sausage, green bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, garlic, and crushed tomatoes. Spices: oregano, basil, red chipped pepper. Did I mention garlic? Oh yeah, and garlic. Once all the flavors meld, I fold in diced (previously cooked) potatoes, and then grab a baguette for dunkin'.
Oh yeah, and more garlic.

7. Chili -
Sauteed ground beef, onion, garlic. Tossed in chopped tomatoes and celery. Black beans and cooked rice. Whole chipotle pepper / red adobo sauce (spicy!). Cayenne, cinnamon and a bit of sugar, diced basil. Added some of the rice water to simmer slow till it all went to the bowl.
Came out pretty darn good with enough to do an egg dish tomorrow.

8. chicken and dumplings
upstate new york style, I guess. At least that's what she calls them.
take three boneless, skinless chicken breasts, trim fat and connective tissue off, fillet into six pieces, pour a can of chicken broth into a large (14 or 16 inch?) pan on medium heat, place breasts in, cook 15 min, flip, cook 15 min, flip, add second can of broth, cook 15 min, flip, cook 15 min, flip, use third can with bisquick to make 'drop' biscuit mix. remove cooked chicken breasts and drop biscuit mix into the remaining thickened broth, reducing to lower heat. Broth should thicken into a gravy, scrape that along with biscuits out onto plate with chicken and eat.
We harvested one of the pumpkins in the back yard earlier in the week, maybe a 20 lber or so; we've got another orange one of about the same size, and a deep green one still growing out there. Nevertheless, we stopped off at a local pumpkin patch place and picked up a 30 lb white one to use out on the front step as well today. Housemate wanted me to whack down goldenrod that had sprung up along the back fence, but when I got close, it was covered with bees, so I left it alone - haven't seen many bees at all this year, so if there are some out there using it, more power to them.

10. Good for you
For caring about the bees. This is what we need to do. I could hack down these grape vines surrounding my garden/pool area (more sunlight for my raised beds would be the result), but I just can't bring myself to do it when I see bees going at it.
I loves me some bees!
My brother had trouble with his dumplings, so I copied and pasted your procedure and sent it to him.
I wish I had pumpkins this year. Unfortuantely, I can grow no curcurbits because of freaking powdery mildew.

11. He'll probably have more trouble if he follows mine.
Cause I was vaguely guessing, and I think now that she used milk in the drop biscuit mix, and the third can of broth actually went in with the chicken earlier in the sequence, and boiled down.

13. And btw, she followed it up with an apple-cheddar pie.
A recipe she said was from 'Giada' I think, who's some tv chef or other, basically you do an apple pie, and grate cheddar (we use cabot white vermont sharp) into the filling before you put the crust over top. Not as sweet as a normal apple pie, with a bit more tang to it. I got into it a bit too early, and it hadn't finished setting, was still a bit sloppy. Still tasted good with a cup of coffee, though.
