Will Pitt manages to make Robin Williams all about himself

I feel as if I've lost a dear old friend.

And that's weird, because I never met Robin Williams. Never saw him in person, anywhere, ever. He existed on screens for me completely. When he was alive, he couldn't have picked me out of a line-up.

I'm also not a celebrity-worshiper in any way, shape or form. The last actor I felt gut-punched at their passing was Jerry Orbach, "Lenny" from Law & Order, because I've been watching that show obsessively since 1991.

This is different, though. I feel like I've lost a friend who always made me laugh, and who taught me a few very important lessons along the way. I decided to be a teacher many, many years ago, and one of the seedcorns of that decision was when I saw "Dead Poet's Society" for the first time. Coming from Boston, I don't have to tell you how much "Good Will Hunting" touched me; I actually worked at the "Do you like apples?" Baskin & Robins next door to the old Bow & Arrow. The bench in the Public Garden where Williams and Damon filmed the "Your move, chief" scene has become a makeshift shrine, so I'm not the only one.

I'm just really, really sad today.

Reba McEntire did this on facebook.  I love Reba, but it's clear that she, like Pittodor, is always a self-promoter first.

He's started at least 4 to 5 threads on RW's life and death; all about him, naturally. If only Robin was aware that the Boston Drunkard was his biggest fan, maybe things would have been different. But now the world will never know.

If I knew that Will Pitt was my most loyal and fanatic fan, I might be a touch depressed myself...

Probably had to share it with Jonathan Winters.

Which was when you decided to stalk underage female students for the first time.  How's that part-time, sex-offender gig going these days, rummy?   :bird:

Classic narcissistic behavior.

What I don't understand is what was so remarkable about Robin Williams that he left such an imprint on primitive minds and feelings?

I mean, yeah, sure, the guy had talent and all that.  But he was "big" during the late 1970s, which was a very long time ago now.

When compared with the ordinary run of humanity, of course he was special, given his talents, but when compared with other television comedians, what made him so special?

One would think Obama died, the way the primitives are carrying on.

I don't know about the DUmmies, but Williams was a one of a kind and an original.  Even though he was a lefty, he did do a lot of USO tours for the troops.

I have to agree.

Apparently, none of them watched "Cadillac Man" in the theater.

He's not special, he didn't leave an imprint of any kind.  When the stock market takes a dive, their dear leader's poll numbers are in the toilet, the '14 elections are going to be a bloodbath and people aren't buying their Gaza support this time, a celebrity suicide is a godsend distraction for them to latch onto.

a celebrity suicide is a godsend distraction for them to latch onto.

I think that's part of it.  They also seem to love the "victim" part of any story.  In RW's case he was a victim of depression and addiction.  I'm sure they relate to that in their narcissistic melodramatic way.

The media doesn't help with all their wall to wall coverage, which I despise in our culture.  Whenever this stuff comes up, my tv goes off. That includes all these high profile trials......I seriously don't understand why people like watching that stuff.

Pitt and Robin Williams were so much alike!

Both alcoholics.

The only differences were that Williams was a drug addict, had great talent, and worldwide fame.

Also, Williams was 63 years old, an age Pitt will never see.

One would think Obama died, the way the primitives are carrying on.

Frank, this is one of the times when deafness probably blunts the impact of RW's comedy.  He had a huge range of voices and characters he could grab at a moment's notice.

The producers of Mork and Mindy gave up trying to write for him and would just insert "Robin goes crazy here" in the scripts.  And he did.

RW did 50+ movies and was arguably the most successful (other than maybe Will Smith) crossover artist to go from stand up to serious movie roles.

When I learned of his passing -- ESPECIALLY b/c it was a suicide -- a part of my youth died with him.  You had to be there in the late 70s and the early 80s, when he did Mork & Mindy and also cut records with his stand up.  They were always queued up in the dorms and we never got tired of him (and they hold up well today).

But it was very auditory.

I am in mourning.

Not sitting shiva but in mourning nonetheless.
