This is very difficult to admit, but I'm facing homelessness, and I need your help.

As some you will recall, I was laid off two years ago when my job was outsourced. Although I did receive unemployment and extended unemployment, those benefits ended. I've desperately and diligently searched for work, but to no avail. Unfortunately, I am in the 'over 50 and over-qualified' niche so many of us in our mid-50's find ourselves.
 
I've recently been diagnosed with some significant, long-term health issues in addition to those I already have, and that has forced me to cease looking for work and to apply for Social Security disability. I have employed an attorney to assist me, and he is confident that my application will be approved, although it will likely take 8-10 months before that happens.
 
In the mean time, my total monthly income consists of a Link (SNAP) card, Medicaid and a $125/month cash grant from my township government. I cashed in my only 'savings' this past spring-- my small life insurance policy-- and was using that money to cover monthly expenses. With the death of my son on June 8th, I spent most of the remaining balance for his cremation and inurment. As of Friday, I spent the last $400 cash I had to pay my rent, and I'm now dead broke and looking homelessness squarely in the face.

Now, the DUmpster, being composed of decent and civilized citizenry, has oftentimes suggested that the primitives check things out before opening their wallets.  While decent and civilized people don't like the primitives, at the same time we don't wish any harm to come to them; we have the primitives' best interests at heart.

However, the primitives don't pay any attention to our advice and counsel.

As it turns out, however, the primitives don't even pay attention to one of their own, who suggested exactly the same thing the DUmpster's suggested for years:

Donations to Internet Personas - A Good Idea?

I make most of my charitable donations to local organizations with proven track records of helping people. However, from time to time, I do donate to individuals who present a legitimate request for needed funds. Before I do that, though, there are a few things I check:
 
1. Does the person have a real name and will the person supply it in a private message or on the website where donations are accepted.? If not, I won't donate, since I can't confirm any of the information.
 
2. Where, in general, is the person located? A state and general area is enough. Again, this is information insist on knowing before sending a donation.
 
3. With that information in hand, I do a Google search to see if the information is accurate. I don't care about an actual address or anything like that. I just want to know if a person by that particular name exists at the location.
 
4. If the person is found on one of the websites that presents information about criminal activity or arrests, I do not donate. It may not even be the same person, but someone else with the same name. But I do not donate in that circumstance. My charitable funds are limited, so I'm careful where they go.
 
That's just my personal practice. Everyone has his or her own way of deciding whether to donate or not.

What's peculiarly odd about this is that if the primitive had from the beginning identified himself as such, he probably would've raised a great deal more money than he has, given the primitive propensity to be vocally and financially supportive of anti-social individuals and causes.

was hoping you were OK. I don't know you, but I deeply admire your efforts to help DUers who have fallen on hard times, and I always contribute *something* to each Wishadoo request posted on DU, even if I often can't manage more than $10 at a time.
 
I don't make all that much, and I have only about $150/month in income from the second week of June to the second week of September (and my first check in September is only a half check!). During the summer I live on what I can save during the 9 1/2 months that I get my regular checks from the university. That is why my contributions during the summer months are only $10 at a time. But during the school year, when I get regular checks, I always try to donate $25-$30 to each funding drive, unless several occur at once, which forces me to limit each contribution to $10.
 
Still, I know that even small contributions can add up fast. I think some people want to contribute but worry that their $5 or $10 donation would be too small to help, but they do add up.
 
Even those whose financial circumstances are too precarious to allow them to donate are doing their part by keeping such threads kicked, and even more important, by offering words of encouragement and compassion to the person involved.
 
A recent OP worried that we could get scammed, but I think that is unlikely when the individual is a long time member with thousands of posts. We can get a sense of who the person is by reading years' and years' worth of posts. I can't imagine someone would run a "long con" for such a measly payout.
 
Anyway, once again I want to thank you for all the good work you have done with Wishadoo.

CHARLESTON — A Charleston man pleaded guilty Monday to a child pornography charge that accused him of having a video recording of two teenage boys engaged in a sex act.

The guilty plea came at the second court appearance for Robert W. Lewis, 54, who was arrested for allegedly having the recording at his residence June 25. He entered the plea after waiving his right to a preliminary hearing.

There was no agreement on the sentence Lewis will receive in exchange for pleading guilty, and the conviction can result in a prison sentence of three to seven years or up to four years of probation. Circuit Judge James Glenn scheduled Lewis’ sentencing hearing for Oct. 19.

Records in Lewis’ case indicate police found pornographic materials, including the child pornography, after they used a warrant to search his residence. Mattoon police detective Jeremy Clark, who conducts computer investigations for several area police agencies, found three videos depicting teenage boys engaging in sex acts.

The investigation began after Charleston police received an anonymous letter that claimed Lewis had been luring young men and boys to his home to get them to do “sexual favors,” according to the records. The investigation also led to the names of some young men who might have engaged in sex with Lewis, the records also show.

Assistant State’s Attorney Tom Bucher, who’s prosecuting the case, said no additional charges against Lewis are planned.

The child pornography was something Lewis downloaded and didn’t produce himself, and it’s clear that the boys in the video are no older than 17, the minimum age requirements for a child pornography charge, Bucher said.

However, charges alleging Lewis engaged in sex acts with underage males would be more difficult to prove and obtain a conviction, Bucher also said. That’s because it appears that the males with whom Lewis might have engaged in the acts were at least 17, the legal age of consent, he explained.

In court Monday, Bucher had no objection to Public Defender Lonnie Lutz’s request that Lewis’ bond be lowered so he’d have to post $1,000 instead of $5,000 to be released from jail. Coles County Jail records on Tuesday did not show Lewis in custody.
