Lincoln was exhumed and the casket was opened in 1901. Interesting reading.
I remember reading that, in an old magazine a long time ago.
The
Saturday Evening Post or
Life magazine did a long story, illustrated with photographs of the exhumation, but for the life of me, I can't recall why they did it. And it was done with a vast audience of residents of Illinois.
I vaguely recall there was even a photograph of the then-long-dead Lincoln, but it was taken from a distance or an angle, and wasn't anything gory.
The only specific thing I recall about the story was that at the time the magazine, whichever one it was, did the story, there was only one person still living, who had been at the exhumation; she had been a little girl at the time.
Old magazines are a treasure trove of information, but damn, one can't remember what where when.
