What was the cancer of, I wonder . . . !

ETA:  A telling two paragraphs from the ESPN story . . .

Quote
He had two operations for cancer in his right cheek between August 2010 and February 2012. The second surgery was complicated, with surgeons removing a facial nerve because it was intertwined with a tumor inside his right cheek. They grafted a nerve from Gwynn's neck to help him eventually regain facial movement.

Gwynn had said that he believed the cancer was from chewing tobacco.

Yes, one of the truly nice guys out there.

Very sad news.  I always enjoyed watching him play.  Seemed like he could hit .300 in his sleep.

He did.  And he made it look easy.

RIP, Tony.  Again, one of the good guys, gone too soon.

R.I.P. Tony.  A true superstar who always had time for the fans.

R.I.P. Tony.  A true superstar who always had time for the fans.

Please allow me to indulge with a fun story involving him.  I went to a wedding at the same hotel where the Padres were staying at.  Happened to get on an elevator with him & some teammates.  I'm no autograph or celebrity hound, but he was clearly a recognizable person.  I offered him a greeting and simply said "pleasure to meet you Mr. Gwynn".  He thanked me & we parted ways.

On my way out the door of the hotel, there were dozens of autograph seekers.  Since I was wearing a suit as were the Padre players, a couple of them asked me for my autograph.  Maybe it was the alcohol I consumed...but I obliged and signed one and only one...as Tony Gwynn. I'm a 6-2 white guy who could never be mistaken for him.

Anyway, just thought I'd share.
