This report was released by Fox59 Indianapolis on 5-12-14.

http://fox59.com/2014/05/12/armed-for-war-local-police-tote-pentagon-surplus/

(The emphasis is mine...EK)

<snip>

“When I first started we really didn’t have the violence that we see today,” said Sgt. Dan Downing of the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department. “The weaponry is totally different now that it was in the beginning of my career, plus, you have a lot of people who are coming out of the military that have the ability and knowledge to build IEDs and to defeat law enforcement techniques.”

As he spoke, Downing was perched in the driver’s seat of a $650,000 Mine Resistant Vehicle (MRAP) that once protected soldiers in Afghanistan from mines, rocket-propelled grenades and .50-caliber weapons.

</snip>

----------------------------------

I called the news hotline for Wishtv (Indianapolis) to see if they might want to get a clarification from the Morgan County Sheriffs Dept. regarding Sgt. Dan Downings statement. The guy I talked to said "we'll check it out."

So....we'll see

Returning vets are all potential terrorists according to the Obama Regime. You don't need military training to be able to fashion an IED.

The news gives enough information every time there is some attack.  If that isn't enough info, then the internet provides the rest.

But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

He sure did dive into the "crazy violent vet" meme, didn't he?

Please tell us, Sgt Dan Downing, how many of the "violent criminals" that you see in the country today are vets? How many of the bombings in the country over the past 5 years have been vets? Hell, how many over the past 50 years? I'll spot you Timothy McVeigh, because I'm intellectually honest.

Now how many of those very same criminals would be rejected for military service, due to lack of high school diplomas, or criminal histories, or gang affiliations?

Go sell your shit elsewhere.

See, as it turns out I just happen to live in Morgan County and I found Sgt. Downings statement to be...troubling.

Here is Sgt. Downing walking back his statement.

Dated 5-21-14

Edit: I contacted Fox59 and they were not aware of the above statement released from Morgan County Sheriff dept.

I received an email address and have since forwarded on a link to the statement. The goal being to have the interview with Sgt. Downing released in full in order to understand where the statement by Sgt. Downing was "contextually incorrect".

What a ****in' asshole.  Why say something so obviously stupid that it has to be clarified or "walked back"?  Either you mean what you say and you think all returning combat vets are potential terrorists, or you're too stupid to be making snap decisions in life or death situations.

Or, his apology is bullshit CYA for the department.
"We make men without chests and expect of them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honor and are shocked to find traitors in our midst. We castrate and then bid the geldings to be fruitful."

C.S. Lewis

A community may possess all the necessary moral qualifications, in so high a degree, as to be capable of self-government under the most adverse circumstances; while, on the other hand, another may be so sunk in ignorance and vice, as to be incapable of forming a conception of liberty, or of living, even when most favored by circumstances, under any other than an absolute and despotic government.

Most of the stuff will end up being white elephants for the departments that get it.  Getting them cheap does not mean they are cheap to operate or maintain.

Thing about military tactical vehicles is that they really aren't made to operate alone, that's not their strength.  Any armored vehicle that is isolated in hostile territory is in rough shape.  Against a truly organized and prepared group, one single armored vehicle is in a world of hurt, but of course those situations are virtually nonexistent in domestic police operations.

The things have a limited degree of utility in most police tactical situations, it's not like you can drive one through the door of a second-story apartment to take down some crackhead holding his baby-mama at gunpoint.  The main utility they have is that they can be used to move a team in to final cover for an assault, or wounded victims out, through areas that might otherwise be under fire, and they can be used as command posts and safe observation platforms to keep command and control during an operation.

While that's all true, Sgt. Downing is the commander of Morgan County SWAT and I find his statement to be troubling.

I want to see that this story is being followed up on. The very least that should be done is to release Sgt. Downings Fox59 interview in full so that we can see where he was taken out of context.
