I go to the main forum page, not the home page.  The first thing I do is check out unread posts.

I enter at the forum page, and immediately check out the five latest posts on the bottom of that.

After which I go to individual forums that indicate new posts, the moderators' forum first, and then I work my way up to the top.

I suspect many use the DUmpster as their first page, although I wish they wouldn't, as conservativecave is more than just the DUmpster, and they miss out on a lot.

It confused me at first when I'd look at what people were viewing and it would say "Portal" for some of them.

If I'm seen viewing the portal, the forum page, that's nearly always--not quite, but nearly always--indicative that I walked away from the computer without logging off.

Generally, I jump around a lot.

Portal/forum is pretty much the same thing.  I'm not entirely sure what the difference is... it was some sort of add-on that was used to create the front page.  Some outside labor was involved in setting CC up.  I'm not sure what all it was... it was before my time.

I check out all the new updates first.  My next stop is usually the Shoutbox (I bet DU doesn't have one of those... it would be anarchy), followed by most recent posts and my usual habituate -- whichever car I worked on most recently.

A dirty little secret I have is that whenever someone posts a thread headlining Atman, I watch the "users online" thing, waiting for Atman to show up to read it.  He rarely disappoints; it's usually within minutes.

And then he leaves a window on that thread for further developments, as he apparently goes on to other things on the internet (in other windows), checking this one now-and-then for new comments.

I used to do that with the sparkling old dude too, but not so much now anymore because he seems to have all but gone away from Skins's island.

Judy grasswire's here quite a bit, and without knowing for sure what she's doing, I get the impression she's collecting links to personal-message other primitives on Skins's island about threads where they're mentioned, which brings them over too.

Yeah.

The forum page as the starting point, rather than "new posts," is good in that it includes the shout-box, and reading the shout-box is pretty much a "must," at least for me.
