about Earthquakes

I am sure you all have seen the damage done by a moderate earthquake in Fullerton. Yes, we have seen fallen walls, a rock fall, cracks and an apartment building evacuated and gas leaks everywhere.

I forgot to point this the other day. It is not just Richter (the actual force of the quake) that determines damage, but also depth. And shallow quakes feel stronger as well.

That is why a moderate quake can do that much damage. This one was very shallow. This is why I have actually said that a seven pointer that is shallow will do a lot of damage as well, while a seven pointer that is not that shallow will do less. It has to do with literally land mass to absorb some of the energy before it reaches the surface.

The ones that we have been getting in SoCal have been moderate but shallow.

Use that as a reminder to check your kit, and update what needs updating, or plain out get a kit if you do not have one. And whatever you do, if you have pets, remember them too.

(mine slept though the last one, and trust me, I am thankful about that, but in San Diego it was best case 10 seconds of light rocking)

Don't get me wrong, the resiliency is much lower in Haiti so you are going to see far more failures, but we would have still seen some major failures. Downtown San Diego would be a canyon of glass (reason 1000 why not to run outside in the middle of an event) But some structures I suspect would have failed too.

Some crunchy stuff here.  Small shallow quakes bad and large deep quakes bad, not intuitive at all.

As you may recall, just a few months ago she advised the DUmp that her doctor agreed she's at her ideal weight.

I believe you may be confused Bad Dog. Suffice it to say, It’s much more complex than you make it out to be and only a trained historian can completely understand it.

Luckily I watched the History Channel while staying at a Holiday Inn Express last night so I can explain it to you.

gNads is a proponent of the 'set point' theory, in which the body somehow "knows" what it wants to weigh.  For example, if one is 150 pounds, and has been such for awhile, that is the body's 'set point'.

When one gorges on cheetos and chocolate chip cookies and becomes and remains 175 pounds, that is the new 'set point'.

gNads got into a long discussion about this quite some time ago.  It is an excellent theory to justify one's fat.
