Nutcase nadin Lectures On Seismology - Resume Update Needed

Nutcase nadin takes a brief timeout from her hectic journo schedule to educate the DUmmies about earthquakes:

about Earthquakes

I am sure you all have seen the damage done by a moderate earthquake in Fullerton. Yes, we have seen fallen walls, a rock fall, cracks and an apartment building evacuated and gas leaks everywhere.

I forgot to point this the other day. It is not just Richter (the actual force of the quake) that determines damage, but also depth. And shallow quakes feel stronger as well.

That is why a moderate quake can do that much damage. This one was very shallow. This is why I have actually said that a seven pointer that is shallow will do a lot of damage as well, while a seven pointer that is not that shallow will do less. It has to do with literally land mass to absorb some of the energy before it reaches the surface.

The ones that we have been getting in SoCal have been moderate but shallow.

Use that as a reminder to check your kit, and update what needs updating, or plain out get a kit if you do not have one. And whatever you do, if you have pets, remember them too.

(mine slept though the last one, and trust me, I am thankful about that, but in San Diego it was best case 10 seconds of light rocking)

Now off to that article I need to write... it was fun stuff.. and "light" reading done.

That's all the nadin meat for today, DUmmies. She has an important deadline from Crazy Miriam's blog.

DUmmy Tommy_Carcetti is proud to show that he knows how to nadin earthquakes, too.

2. Apparently, one of the reasons why the Haitian earthquake was so deadly....

....was because it was a very shallow earthquake.

Okay, okay, just a little more meaty analysis, then it's back to that journo work:

4. Yes, that was one of the reasons

that shallow under El Cajon, we would see pancakes as well.

Don't get me wrong, the resiliency is much lower in Haiti so you are going to see far more failures, but we would have still seen some major failures. Downtown San Diego would be a canyon of glass (reason 1000 why not to run outside in the middle of an event) But some structures I suspect would have failed too.
nadin knows Haiti.

Wow! DUmmy Maedhros has also learned how to nadin:

5. However, the most devastating quakes worldwide tend to be deep-focus earthquakes
such as those experienced in Peru.

These arise from slippage of a subducting oceanic plate underneath the overriding continental plate. Much, much more energy is released from these events than shallower transverse faulting events.

It's all old news to nadin:

8. Very, very true,

and that would be what would happen here if oh... San Andreas slipped. Personally I do not think the state can EVER be ready for that event.

My question is how can it tell the difference between a quake and her fat ass walking across the floor?

Fat ass? Au cntrainere!!

As you may recall, just a few months ago she advised the DUmp that her doctor agreed she's at her ideal weight.

Her candy-apple physique is perfect for a professional journo/photog.

If she lost weight the Nomex wouldn't fit properly.

I believe you may be confused Bad Dog. Suffice it to say, It’s much more complex than you make it out to be and only a trained historian can completely understand it.

Luckily I watched the History Channel while staying at a Holiday Inn Express last night so I can explain it to you.

Based on her initial post and her reply to DUmmie Maedhros, she said that a seven pointer that is shallow is more dangerous than a seven pointer that is not shallow, but a seven pointer that is deep is more dangerous than oh a seven pointer that is not deep.

Since shallow = not deep and not deep = shallow when a seven pointer hits it means the Rubic's Cube is crossed and you better have some of that special milk.

I'm not even going to give a thought to the "10 seconds of light rocking" that she experienced, but at least it seems to have her in a good mood.

No, this isn't crunchy, this is meat.

Crunchy news is air-filled, lacking in substance.

Meat is the opposite, and is normally reserved for nadin's comment-free bully-less blog or Crazy Miriam's pennysaver.

This is one of those rare occasions where she's giving the DUmmies a little taste of meat.

So true. It is such a burden. Knowing all of these arcs and trends. Knowing all of this pesky technical and scientific information. With all of this knowledge packed into my head if I don’t let some of it out every so often my forehead begins to swell from all of the info and I begin to look like a Klingon.

Now I've got to get back to my article on explaining why Einstein and Tesla were mental midgets. Fun stuff.

gNads is a proponent of the 'set point' theory, in which the body somehow "knows" what it wants to weigh.  For example, if one is 150 pounds, and has been such for awhile, that is the body's 'set point'.

When one gorges on cheetos and chocolate chip cookies and becomes and remains 175 pounds, that is the new 'set point'.

gNads got into a long discussion about this quite some time ago.  It is an excellent theory to justify one's fat.
This too shall pass.
