The Burger Chain That Pays $10 An Hour With Benefits
The Burger Chain That Pays $10 An Hour With Benefits

By Bryce Covert

Shake Shack, a burger chain with locations in Florida, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C. as well as international locations in the Middle East, Russia, Turkey, and the United Kingdom, pays starting workers $9.50 an hour outside of New York City and $10 an hour for New Yorkers, CEO Randy Garutti told ThinkProgress. It also offers full-time employees health, dental, vision, retirement, and disability benefits plus paid time off.

But on average, workers get $10.70 an hour thanks to a program it calls Shack Bucks. Every month, it gives employees a percentage of the company’s top-line sales. “It’s sort of immediate revenue sharing, not a long-term program,” he noted.

The company pays about 70 percent of employees’ health care premiums and also matches contributions to their 401(k)s. He added that he is “more excited” than all of these perks about how many employees move up into manager roles. “There are a lot of people who started making $9 an hour and are now general managers in our restaurants making very good money,” he said. The owners started in fine dining and brought the compensation practices from those restaurants into its original burger and hot dog stand.

When asked if these practices have come with concrete benefits for the company itself, he responded, “Absolutely,” adding, “Our turnover is lower, we can hire the best, they stay longer, and we can grow them into management.” And it pays off for customers. “If the team feels taken care of, then they’ll go out and take care of the guests.”

Well that's all well and good, DUmmies, but you missed an incredibly important detail...

Allow me to show it to you:

Did you see that, DUmmies? That means they can and do discriminate in hiring. They want shiny, happy people working there, not a bunch of TwixVoys who show up drunk and full of rage and excuses. I looked at the menu, and GUESS WHAT? You can't order a discussion about "rape culture." All they sell is fast food. They don't care about your blog, your OWS bullshit, or anything else not completely dedicated to selling hamburgers and hot dogs.

Does that REALLY appeal to you?

I thought you were all health nuts. I didn't know you supported businesses devoted to making people fat. A burger, fries, and a coke there consists of at least 960 calories. How is that appropriate?

And those 960 calories, per the menu, cost right at $10.

$10 for a burger, fries, and soda. That's $40 for a family of four, or, said differently, 10% of the gross pay.

If paying higher wages and increasing the cost of the food means higher profits, then businesses will figure it out soon enough and comply.

But look primitives, you can't on one hand call corps greedy and on the other claim that paying a living wage is more profitable. If that were the case, greedy corps would have figured that out long before you would have stumbled across it.

The example indicates clearly that Shake Shack finds the minimum wage adequate, since they come right out and say that they discriminate in hiring. They want the best. Anyone who has had the pleasure of eating at a Chik Fil A or a In-n-Out knows what the customer service effects of good hiring are.

I will say it like this: Shake Shack wouldn't hire a DUmmy, or at least they wouldn't keep one around for long.

The feeling's mutual, though.  DUmmies were recently made aware of $15 an hour burger flipper dream jobs, and they turned up their noses at the potential for employment at such rates.  Apparently, having the issue to whine about is just as important to DUmbasses, as it is to their political masters up in the Big House that. Solving the issue; likewise, not so much.

Looking at their locations, they're all in high end cities and neighborhoods. They're in the greater NYC area (11), Boston (2), Philadelphia (3), DC (3), and Miami (3). That's it. I would expect to pay more and get paid more in high end cities.

When you have some food chain paying $10/hr in Great Bend, Kansas, get back with me.

You have to run up to Russell for that.  Don't forget, that's Bob Doles home town.

John Adams warned in a letter, “Remember democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet, that did not commit suicide.”

See DUmbasses...wage is what is called an incentive to better oneself.
You useless mooks demand handouts and wonder why most people would only use a hammer to put out a fire if you were burning.

  • All in all, not bad, not bad at all
It also offers full-time employees .... retirement, plus paid time off.

Boca Raton is full of Shake Shack retirees.

Oh, in those high end cities, that wage level is nothing but grinding poverty.  Liberal hellholes chockfull of taxes and regulations make all costs skyrocket.  Liberals absolutely loathe the poor and middle class, and want them to suffer.

Let's not forget that NYC itself wants a chunk of that $10/hr salary. Increase the minimum wage = increase tax receipts. Funny how that works.

Yet sadly, I was referring to NYC INCOME tax. Gee, that magnanimous, progressive $10/hr is looking GREAT, isn't it?

And don't forget the union dues they'll have to pay once the monkeys realize that the workers are being exploited. Won't be long before all the people trying to help these high earners take all the excess wages away.

Every country store used to have 3 hot dogs for a dollar........now, you can't get one period. Health dept. put them out of business.

The same happens with sales tax when the price of gas goes up.
