Updating: Reports of earthquake damage, 3 dead in Arequipa, Peru


Though no deaths or serious injuries have been reported as a result of the earthquake that occurred at 11:42 am on Wednesday, Sept. 25., inhabitants of the cities nearest the epicenter of the earthquake are reporting that there has been substantial damage to some homes and schools.

I guess for those who make light...

I hope you people are happy. Three dead, maybe, er, uh six months ago, uh, maybe I think.

Anyway, just to be safe, she's strapping on the Nomex.

You just receive the alerts?  I'm glad you disclosed that information, because I almost mistook you for a seismologist.

After:
Expect aftershocks. These secondary shockwaves are usually less violent than the main quake but can be strong enough to do additional damage to weakened structures and can occur in the first hours, days, weeks, or even months after the quake.

Look for and extinguish small fires. Fire is the most common hazard after an earthquake.
Be aware of possible tsunamis if you live in coastal areas. These are also known as seismic sea waves (mistakenly called "tidal waves"). When local authorities issue a tsunami warning, assume that a series of dangerous waves is on the way. Stay away from the beach.

Be careful when driving after an earthquake and anticipate traffic light outages.

Christ, as if "Seismo-dyke" wasn't annoying enough.

Anyone in SoCal knows that Dr. Lucy Jones from Caltech gets on TV every time they have a quake hard enough to jingle the glass in the cupboards.  I've heard her referred to as the above since the late-90's.

El Comercio quoted an eyewitness in Acari, one of the districts nearest the epicenter in the Arequipa region:

“The earthquake felt much more intense than the ‘96 Nazca quake. It was hard to walk during the long duration of the earthquake. The glass windows in many of the houses have broken, and schools have suffered material damages. Students have been evacuated to their homes, but there are still no reports of people being wounded,” said Acari resident Carmen Bedoya.
