Goldwater new what it meant to be conservative. This has changes so much, a man like this would be difficult to get a republican nomination these days with the massive religious right. And not that I disagree with the views of the religious right, but a heavy involvement of religion in gov. is not what the founding fathers had in mind.
I feel a lot of people struggle with the distinction of freedom of religion and separation of church and state. Both of these are equally important parts of our Country. But the religious right is violating the notion of a separation of church and state. Goldwater thought the Gov. had no business in areas like abortion, sex, ect.. and that a politicians view on abortion should not be a determining factor in support. Additionally he takes exception to any one exercising Gov. power for the means of religious/moral laws . He calls this "an abuse of constitutional power".
Here are some Goldwater quotes
"quit discriminating against people just because they're gay. You don't have to agree with it, but they have a constitutional right to be gay."
"I think of these moneymaking ventures by fellows like Pat Robertson and others who are trying to take the Republican Party away from the Republican Party, and make a religious organization out of it. If that ever happens, kiss politics goodbye"
-Barry Goldwater -Washington Post interview (1994)
"The religious factions that are growing throughout our land are not using their religious clout with wisdom. They are trying to force government leaders into following their position 100 percent. If you disagree with these religious groups on a particular moral issue, they complain, they threaten you with a loss of money or votes or both."
-Barry Goldwater Speech in the US Senate (16 September 1981)
So will the conservative party ever have another Mr. Conservative? Someone who isn't altered by focus groups and marketers that have to agree with religious right to get votes.
