Planned Parenthood expands to Houston suburbs

Nonprofit wants to add to clientele with new clinics and updated decor

Annie Nguyen, 27, a secretary without health insurance, has been treated at Planned Parenthood's main clinic in Midtown, but she prefers going to the organization's satellite facility on FM 1960.

"It's easier for me to go to the one in Champions," said the resident of northwest Harris County, who goes to the clinic for regular wellness checkups. "It's closer to my home."

Over the next four years, Planned Parenthood intends to open two more suburban clinics to serve the organization's primary targeted group - poor and uninsured women - as well as more affluent, paying patients.

The group also plans to open a new flagship clinic and headquarters on the Gulf Freeway near the University of Houston that would feature a contemporary ambience and furnishings designed to appeal to well-to-do patients as well as the less well-off.

The nonprofit is not giving up its primary mission - providing affordable birth control and reproductive health care to the poor and the uninsured - but is trying to boost revenue by diversifying its clientele, said Peter Durkin, chief executive of Planned Parenthood of Houston and Southeast Texas.

"It is derogatory to say (nonprofit) health centers have to look a certain way," said Richards, daughter of former Texas Gov. Ann Richards. "Our clients all deserve a center that is welcoming."

The nonprofit's affiliates had a combined surplus of $115 million and $1 billion in annual revenue in 2006, Richards said.

More than $336 million of that revenue came from government grants and contracts. No public money can be used for abortions, but the money is used to help pay for providing contraceptives and other types of care to low-income women, Durkin said.

Disgusting. It IS a shell game. And I want to know how they can still be called "non-profit".

Oh, how that makes me sick.     It's truly one of my pet peeves that it is allowed to continue to operate the way it does.

It's amazing how this information is so readily available, in regards to their profits, yet the IRS appears to have turned its back on this.
