The $2.2 Billion Bird-Scorching Solar Project

A giant solar-power project officially opening this week in the California desert is the first of its kind, and may be among the last, in part because of growing evidence that the technology it uses is killing birds.

 U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz is scheduled to speak Thursday at an opening ceremony for the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating Station, which received a $1.6 billion federal loan guarantee.

 The $2.2 billion solar farm, which spans over five square miles of federal land southwest of Las Vegas, includes three towers as tall as 40-story buildings. Nearly 350,000 mirrors, each the size of a garage door, reflect sunlight onto boilers atop the towers, creating steam that drives power generators.

The utility scale solar projects cost up to four times what it would cost to build a natural gas fired plant and they produce much less electricity, which results in higher energy costs for the consumer.

And consider that building a nuke plant more than 10 times the size of this place would cost about $8 to $10 billion.  And it would run 24/7 at full rated capacity between ROH's.

But hey, it's not about the results, it's how these libtards FEEL, isn't it?

There would be less damage to the environment too.  However, cooling it might be a problem in the desert.

Two words--Palo Verde.

Almost 4000 MWe.  Granted, it's the single largest consumer of water in Arizona, but it's reclaimed water, so that mitigates it somewhat.

Why the liberals(DUmmies) like this....the French have had an array of mirrors and a set up like that on a mountain top for years where they achieve temperatures approaching 3 times the temperature of the sun's surface.
