Even in places where they should be a great employer, they don't have enough people to stock the shelves or check people out.

Keep paying people shit wages and treating them like dirt, and you will find no one wanting to work for you. No one wanting to work for you means nothing on the shelf, no one to check you out, and customers going other places. Business 101.

Looking up Wolfe Research, I see they have an annual revenue of $2,700,000.  Wow! They're right there with a whole bunch of other research groups no one pays attention to because they haven't proven themselves to be reliable.

I worked as a department manager in retail for a large chain.  Walmart sounds like they are using the same model.  It's a formula that uses historical data to schedule labor hours vs sales projections.

They don't schedule employees by dollars, but by hours.  It's up to the managers of the stores to adhere to those hours, or they get called on the carpet by corporate and lose bonuses.

The biggest problem with stocking the shelves has more to do with corporate than how many employees are on the floor.  If the store doesn't get their shipments in because of late deliveries or slow suppliers, that seems to be a purchasing/distribution problem.  Also, a lot of purchases are months in advance of actual receipt.

I think it's the suppliers that are having the problems getting their stuff out the door and into the central warehouses.

Do the DUmmies who hate WalMart because of shoddy merchandise, much of which is from China - which the DUmmies love to hate because of 'worker exploitation - ever think to complain about the granting (and annual extension) of Most Favored Nation status (recently renamed NTR, or Normal Trade Relations)?

Perhaps reducing the influx of shoddy merchandise would cause more manufacturing/production to return to the US, and allow the DUmmies to focus on expanding the unions they also love.

There lies the problem. Union wages drive up costs which in turn reduces demand. That's why a lot of production went to other countries in the first place.

You don't have to wait that long.  When I worked as an overnight cashier at our local Wallyworld, the "freakshow" usually started right after 2:00am, and continued until 4:00 or so.  Buggies full of dirty, screaming kids, baby's mammas in PJ's, baby's daddys drunk, both "parents" north of 250 pounds and with so many piercings they looked like they fell face first into an open fishing tackle box!  Tattoos galore.  Picking up chips, candy, sodas, etc., and paying for it with EBT or WIC. 

Usually got real quiet after they left.  4-6 was the LONGEST 2 hours of the entire night!

How did you know I was going to Walmart tomorrow? 

That being said, several years ago before DVR's were popular and well known, we bought a combination DVR/DVD burner. You could record to the hard drive or create a DVD from a recording.  We decided we liked it and went to get a second one several weeks later.

No one the electronics department had a clue as to what I was wanting. I had the brand name and model number written down. I was told they didn't carry anything like it and never had. WTF??

Ended up going to the Walmart on the opposite side of town and they had plenty of them on the shelf.
