Well, it's kinda not true.
Federal laws passed on 29 June 2013 ban the promotion of homosexuality to minors. According to some commentators the new law makes it illegal to hold any sort of public demonstration in favor of gay rights, speak in defense of gay rights and distribute material related to gay rights,or to state that gay relationships are equal to heterosexual relationships.
That's all. There are Middle Eastern and African nations where they will execute you for being queer.
Russia simply asks and legislates that you not hold gay pride parades or demonstrations and refrain from propaganda justifying the LGBT lifestyle.
So tell me... what is wrong with Russia's law?
In fact I see Russia's Gay laws as being kinda progressive:
Homosexuality Legal - Yes
Same Age Legal Consent - Yes
Gay Adoptions in Russia - Yes
Gays in the military (open) - Yes
Right to change legal gender - Yes
Blood Donor - Yes
