No bond for elderly Sebring woman who repeatedly fed bears

Quote
SEBRING (FOX 13) -

Neighbors say Mary Musselman has been feeding backyard animals as long as they can remember.

"She fed the squirrels, the birds, strays and that was in the community. She's just always been that kind of soul," says neighbor Patty Palmer.

That is, until Wednesday, when the 81-year retired physical education teacher was hauled to jail for feeding bears one too many times.

I understand feeding bears is very dangerous as they become more aggressive around humans and will go into people's homes. What I do not understand is, why no bond?

There's gotta be more to the story.

I am sure there is. Anyways, I never understood people who fed bears or any large wildlife.

She threatened to kill the cops and resisted arrest.

Seems like the police and wildlife folks had tried to reason with her, educate on the harm she was doing to the bears and the danger she was putting the bears and other people in.

I have this thing about bears, I hate them, fear them and for good reason.   I do not care what species a bear is, they are akin to having packs of wild pit bulls running about the area.

Never know what those darn things are going to do, friendly on moment and on the offensive the next. Problem is bears are smart, they can back track their pray and have strength enough to open locked cars and trucks to get to what ever they smell inside.

Virginia Beach had some darn fool, wealthy by now  bring in a small 150 pound bear and challenge the  Navy Seals and public at large to spend just 5 minutes in a boxing ring and wrestle the little bear.    Claws were covered as was the mouth so no  human blood was splashed about.

I believe the people were charged about $50.00 each and if they could stay the 5 minutes received $500.00.  All the fitness Gyms, sent in a few of their strongest men, lumber jacks came out of the mountains and both the Marines, Army and Air Force sent in those very fit men.

The ring was set up on the board walk----this was in mid 1980's before Petra  could raise a stink. The bear was given a 10 minute break between bouts water and shade.   At this rate the bear could wrestle 4 people every hour, more if the human gave up after 3 minutes or so.

What a sight, the kids and I who lived just minutes from the area got tickets to sit and watch a Colosseum -mini at that - and cheer on either the bear or the human.

Only 150 pounds of bear against  a human that in some cases were almost twice its size in height and weight.

After two days not ONE human could pin this bear or even get it off its feet.

Bears are super natural strong even a baby half the size of a full grown bear took on all comers and defeated the humans.

Lesson learned, had the bear not had a muzzle and claws taped there would have been a beach full of blood.

Worse scenario is to run into one of the big adult bears suffering from rabies, while you are out in the back yard playing with your kids, or having the kids walking home from the school bus and get charged.     BTW on level ground a bear can out run a horse for  a good
1/8 mile.  One cannot outrun them on afoot or on a bicycle or even a moped.

If I knew anyone in my neighborhood was luring in bears with food, I don't care who they are or their reasons for doing so, those bears would go missing in short order.

They gave her numerous warnings, educational videos, and she has said she won't stop.  A bear was euthanized because of her.  Her husband has cancer and she cares more about a Damn bear than being with him in his final days.  Keep her.

You can hold crazy people against their will if it protects animals but not if it protects humans.....liberalism is a crazy disease.

But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

Yeah--she was told to stop and refused, along with what was said above.

Bears are NOT cute little Yogi/Boo-Boo bears who come to get those "pick-a-nick baskets!" from Ranger Smith.  I'm not all that wild about having bird feeders in the yard, to tell the truth, and if they get torn down next summer, Scoobs and I are going to have a real heart to heart discussion about having them there.

Unfortunately, if a bear is hungry enough  they will find a way. However , I might have a solution to the shepherd hook problem. I found this nifty bird feeder..

. Squirrels cant get a grip on it, and slide off. The feed stays dry. We hang ours in a hydrangea tree, along with a thistle sock. I got mine at the Aubuchon Hardware at he Lee Traffic circle. You  and Scoobs (kids too) have an open invite to stop by anytime.

Sea my dear, I find no purpose in feeding birds or other wild life in the summer or spring.

Not that YOU do it but many do and it perturbs me these wildlife may find the food they can eat  when they are hungry with little effort.

As most wildlife teaches the young to survive, after a couple generations the wildlife will depend on humans for food, get lazy and with a full belly not be bothered to teach their pups to hunt.

No#1    They are taking away the wild life's natural diet and they have no reason to get about and find what they were born to eat.

No#.2  I feed the squirrels and birds only when the ground is covered in a foot or more of snow for 4-5 days in a row.

Were I living somewhere that had wolves and I wanted to help them survive, the worse thing I could do would be to drag a cow caucus out into the woods every 3 weeks so the Wolves would not have to do their born trait of hunting.

What happens to the Wolves if I go on a 3 month vacation ?   Now where does their food come from?   The wolves would be use to the smell of humans that bring them their daily food, Got a guess where they go hunting now, following the smell of humans ?

We have a few insane Blue Jays in the neighborhood. I will put out seeds when the snow gets too high for them to rummage and find food.  I have no bird feeder, I push the deck table to be in front of my sliding glass doors and add the peanuts and bird seed.

We have had some fun times watching birds to come to eat the seeds, and laughed out loud at the antics of the squirrels , we are learning a bit about squirrels body language, what a spinning tail means and the chirp  to Run from others.

I do not feed the Hawks or Owls or any bird of pray, they seem to do nicely on their own. We have not corrupted them yet.

Feed a bear is to kill a bear< I hate the suckers but unless a bear is ill or being fed they try to stay away from us>

Hooligan, recognise the word, brings to mind young people acting out in a bad way.    However a park ranger in NC told me this is the name for the teenage bears,

Males heading into mating time, all full of vinegar and piss.   Very unpredictable, much worse then the Adults.  Only half grown but ready to take on an adult bear or a small car.

Were these bear feeding people head to FL. and feed the gators or the Pythons or the Bears that are now causing problems ??
