drunkest places in the world
« on: January 31, 2014, 11:28:39 PM »
I'm up late tonight, at the sickbed, probably the deathbed, of a cat; the veterinarian assured me that she's in no pain or distress, and unless or until she demonstrates that, it's okay to simply let her remain here until she slips away naturally.  It's old age, not illness or an injury or anything.

But one can't just sit around and twiddle one's thumbs; one has to be doing something, anything.

I'll spoil this in case one doesn't want to read the story at the link above.

15 drunkest nations in the world

15) Ireland
14) Portugal
13) South Korea
12) Lithuania
11) Croatia
10) Belarus
09) Slovenia
08) Romania
07) Andorra
06) Estonia
05) Ukraine
04) Russia
03) Hungary
02) Czech Republic
01) Moldova

10 drunkest states in America

10) South Dakota
09) Vermont
08) Montana
07) Alaska
06) Wisconsin
05) North Dakota
04) Nevada
03) Delaware
02) District of Columbia
01) New Hampshire

I wonder how valid this is, though; the states are measured on alcohol sales per capita, and Vermont and New Hampshire are located next to high-tax states, meaning there's probably a lot of cross-border sales to non-residents.  And Nevada of course has more tourists than residents.

I'm a bit suspicious of the accuracy of Georgia being number 8 on the most sober lists. If that is true it means that there are some drinking SOBs in the other states.

Yep, drive 20 miles past several liquor stores to buy their beverage of choice....causes a lot of green house gases. :lmao:

I think you are on to something.

Let me preface the rest of this by saying that I am a Baptist and I am in Georgia. I've been told my entire life that drinking alcohol is wrong, a sin, and/or condemned in the Bible. I've yet to have anyone, including preachers, successfully back up their claims. I have had them show me where the Bible condemns drunkenness (which I already knew about) and try to equate that with having a drink. I have had them basically say that the writers of the Bible didn't know the difference between wine and fruit juice.

What's the difference between a Baptist and a Methodist?

A Methodist will talk to you at the liquor store.

Why do you have to take two Baptists with you when you go fishing?

Because if you take just one, he'll drink all your beer.

I'm still wondering how NH is on top of that list when every bar in town closes by 10 pm.

I think tourists help Ireland's standing.  The natives I met were all too poor to really "tie one on."
