Iowans are twice as likely to self-identify as conservatives than as liberals, but other statistics indicate the Hawkeye state remains a swing-state for Republican and Democratic political candidates according to a Gallup Poll released today.
The survey shows 40.1 percent of Iowans identifying themselves as conservatives, 37.9 percent as moderates, and 19.8 percent as liberals.
The research also shows that 42.7 percent of Iowans identifying themselves as Republicans or leaning that way, while 40.6 percent called themselves Democrats or leaned in that direction. The state’s evenly-divided congressional delegation is a sign of those two numbers with one Republican and one Democrat in the U.S. Senate and two Republicans and two Democrats in the U.S. House. In the Iowa Legislature, Democrats control the Senate, while Republicans hold a majority in the House.
The state-level findings are part of a series of surveys based on key political, economic, and well-being measures from Gallup Daily tracking throughout 2013.
Nationwide, 36.8 percent of Americans called themselves conservatives, 36.6 percent described themselves as moderates ,and 22.2 percent said they were liberals.
