No more Amazon for this house- we just got an email from them saying we owe taxes on previous purchases. Put of the blue! From what I can gather it's part of a deal they struck with the state of Tennessee to build a distribution center in East Tennessee. I love Amazon but I am sick as I can be of taxes, taxes and more taxes and will be canceling everything with them ASAP starting now.

this is a musician friend of mine, recently a born again kind of person. Gospel singer. I've tried to respond but come across kind of nasty when I do. But I know all the nice people hre will be able to help me.....

Were the purchases completely handled in Tennessee? If not, then I'm curious what gives Amazon the authority to charge out of state taxes over the Internet. I thought that was a federal issue, though I may be wrong. I wouldn't be shocked to learn that Amazon made some sort of agreement with Tennessee that is not actually supported under federal law.

I would be quite upset if Amazon tried to charge me taxes retroactively on all the purchases I've ever made.

Jim doesn't like retroactive taxes, but the few other responders seem to think it's just okey-dokey for Amazon to request back taxes because it's good for society in general.

I got that email. It simply says you bought this much stuff from Amazon that wasn't taxed, and you may owe the sales tax to the state of Tennessee.

Of course, I do. But I've never heard of anyone paying it. It's been one of Amazon's most attractive features for years. 

The message goes on to say this amount will not be reported to the state, but beginning in 2014, Amazon will begin collecting sales tax. I think they've made similar agreements with other states.

Amazon will be just like other retailers who add sales tax at point of sale.

But wait! DUmmy Bennyboy is in Tennessee? Since when? I thought he was somewhere out in the crazy West.

It's not a scam. It's from amazon.com and the only link is to the tn.gov Tennessee state site, where there's a form for submitting sales taxes.

I'm sure they're being swamped by people paying their Amazon sales tax.

Don't understand, my state has no sales tax so if I buy anything  over the internet ,out of state I may have to pay a sales tax to WHO ?????

Let's face it; Benny didn't get bent out of shape over anything Amazon or Tennessee is doing. He didn't like the "I am sick as I can be of taxes, taxes and more taxes" comment because the more people who adapt that attitude the less freebies that can be passed on to him and the other moochers. Shows just how out of whack your worldview is when someone making a passing comment that they're tired of being overtaxed is such that you feel the need to head it off at the pass.
