Oh my.

<<<has no opinion on homeopathic medicine, but thinks every option, even if one disagrees with it, should be available to those who wish to try it, even chiropractic, because it just might work.

Sorry to jump on the band-woo-gan, but what's with "FDA-approved homeopathic medicines?"

If you listen to Serius XM, you've probably heard the ads for the smoking cessation spray. You spray it on the back of your throat when you feel a craving for a cigarette, and your craving goes away. Maybe a jar full of cat urine would have the same effect, but here is what has me scratching my head about these ads; they claim that the spray is "all natural" and contains 100% "FDA approved homeopathic medicines."

So what they're saying is essentially "this is a bottle of water." And how do they get away with saying it is "FDA approved?" Oh wait...I get it. It contains "100% FDA approved HOMEOPATHIC medicines." The key word, obviously, is homeopathic. Which, translated into English, means THERE ARE ABSOLUTELY NO FDA APPROVED MEDICATIONS IN THE BOTTLE! Once the dilution is diluted to the dilution of the dilution and further diluted, what is left? NOTHING. A bottle of water.

This isn't the 1800's, but snake oil salesmen live on. Spray water on the back of your throat and you'll quit smoking. But you'd better pay $29.99 for this little bottle of water, or else it won't work.

One wonders why the twin's so bothered by this; as far as he knows, "homeopathic medicine" might mean "gay medicine," because the word's similar.

4. Your post reminds me of an old video-store mantra.

Many years ago, back when watching a movie at home meant a trip to the video store, I paid a visit to our local VHS cassette purveyor. I stood staring at the wall of New Releases, finding nothing I cared enough to pay for. The clerk came up to me and asked me if she could help me find something (she was straight out of Central Casting, with black tank-top, tats, nose ring, jet-black hair -- and this was early 1990's).

She offered me this gem of advice, which holds true for so many things besides movies:

The quality of the movie is inversely proportionate to the number of rental copies on the wall.

That's when I learned to start looking for the unknown Indi films. One copy for rent, but lots of Sundance awards and good reviews. One of those for every 50 copies of a "Hollywood Blockbuster."

3. Missing is that the FDA doesn't regulate them in the same way they ...

... regulate prescription drugs.

http://www.fitsugar.com/You-Asked-Homeopathic-Medicine-Regulated-FDA-1696481

Nowadays though, new OTC drugs are subjected to thorough testing and review by the FDA for both safety and effectiveness before they can hit the shelves, but oddly enough this requirement doesn't apply to homeopathic drugs. These medications are, however, required to meet certain legal standards for strength, quality, purity, and packaging. In 1988, the FDA began requiring all homeopathic medicines to be labeled as "homeopathic." Their labels must also list the ingredients, dilutions, instructions for use, and what specific medical problems the medicine is intended to treat.

I don't have sirius radio, but I don't pay much attention to any homeopathic ads.

it's not like an overdose would be harmful.

One wonders why Atman brought up this subject; it's w-a-a-a-a-a-a-y outside the realm of his experiences, and even further removed from his understanding.  It's very odd; it's as if franksolich were to post something about the use of kale in Cuban cuisine.

Is it "Serius" radio as Atman spells it, or "Sirius" radio as the happy primitive spells it?

I think I have a pretty good idea which primitive goofed, but I'd like to be sure.....

I share your opinion of homeopathic medicine, by the way.

I've never had occasion to try homeopathic medicine, and wouldn't touch chiropractic with a ten-foot primitive, but still, I think such unconventional medicine should be available to those who wish to try it.

And one of the unintended consequences of 0bamacare, to be sure, will be more popular reliance upon what are probably quack medicines--as what happened in front of my own eyes in the socialist paradises of the workers and peasants when routine conventional medical care became scarce.

When I was growing up, conduction of sound through the bones was considered hoodoo, voodoo, by nearly all the "brightest" "scientific" minds; it was proven it was a final fact, it was the last word, that one could hear only by the conduction of sound through the air.

Oooops.

Even these days, decades later, when an otolaryntologist, who of course understands speech problems of the deaf, compliments me on the quality of my voice, he asks how it happened to be.

I tell him how it happened to be; that when I was in my last two years of college, a graduate student in speech therapy used to take a balloon and blow it up.  And then she would put her lips on one side of it, and I'd reluctantly put my lips on the other side of it.  Finally, she would utter a sound, and as if by magic, I repeated exactly the same sound the same way she did.

I've never met an otolaryntologist who ever believed this would work.  But it did.

One shouldn't reject anything before trying it first.

Homeopathy, acupuncture, chiropractic, voodoo, and good vibes all have exactly the same healing qualities.

The only harm they do is to the poor souls who use them in place of effective medication, and they should have the freedom to suffer from their ignorance.

They should not be allowed to subject children to those quackeries, even if it's covered by democrat insurance.

I've used both of the bolded.  Raw honey is an awesome topical antibiotic.  The apple cider vinegar cure amounts to two teaspoons of cider vinegar in a glass of water.  Tastes absolutely disgusting.  :puke: :runaway:  I switched to apple cider after two days of the vinegar concoction.  Works like a charm for me.

Oh -Oh- after I posted I had a DR. Appointment, now rethinking this thread.   A couple months of having breathing problems and tummy problems finally got in to see the doctor.

I was given a RX for Levofloxacin and told to buy a OTC probiotic[ Align], a couple inhalers and sent to the hospital straight away for chest EX ray.

Got home and took all pills and then noticed the Probiotic had a warning ---This statement has not been evaluated by the FDA, this product in not intended to diagnose, cure or prevent any disease.------

The statement is that only this product has a UniqueB infantic 35624  Bacteria to keep tummy and system healthy.

OK so why the heck will this help me ?

On to the antibiotic, I checked on that and ran into one heck of a problem, the web sites tell of some of the most horrid tales of complications from this drug, a so called antibiotic.  Now I have taken antibiotics for 50+ years and only penicillin gave me problems, others, some Yeast infections from hell.

Some sites have posters that gave me the creeps telling of problems from this drug that is what the all call poison.

So it is a toss up who to believe as all people have different metabolism so why expect everyone to respond the same way to the same medication?

Same as booze, some drink and get mellow and fall asleep, others get wild and look for a fight.

So here I sit waiting for the side effects from this antibiotic to kick in if ever.   I have 9 more days to take this pill from hell, as a lot of posters call it.

I am not afraid of spontaneous combustion but wonder how one of the side effects is diarrhea and the probiotic is to prevent it will go as the pills fight it out and what happens if I fart in front of the fireplace.

Strange things happen and this should be interesting.

1.  When folks like you and I get old the little bugs that help our digestive system work may die off.  The probiotic resupplies them much like yeast or that stuff you pour into your septic system.

Yah but Yeast infections due to antibiotics is a killer.  I have noticed that in the last 20 years when prescribed for any infection the doctors usually RX just one pill to stop any infections from killing off the good bacteria with the bad.  This new doctor of mine must have forgotten to give me one.

Vesta, the word 'Antibiotic' basically means 'it kills life.'  Their value as medicine is that they are a lot more deadly to single-cell microbes than they are to specialized animal and plant cells.  Of course they're poisons, that's why they work

The prescribed dosages are calculated to keep them deadly to the microbes but not to you, which (Aside from just legality) is a great reason to stay away from self-medicating with them.  Of course some people are deathly allergic to particular antibiotics, particularly penicillin, like my late Dad was (And no, that had nothing to do with why he cashed in his chips), but that's a separate issue than whether they are poisonous by nature.
