NYT Dialect Test

I just ran across this.  I'm interested to see what anybody else gets, if they take the test.

I've never resided in any of the three areas my dialect is allegedly similar too.  My parents had a great influence on my speech when I was younger (I was homeschooled for several years), which might be why SE PA is red, and I have only been there once in my life.

I did the test it showed most of Fla and SE area of the US...Which is right for me.

I had my spousal unit take the test, and it placed her squarely where we live (which is where she was born and raised), down to the city name. 

Our wildly different results might explain why the Great Battle of Pronunciation is always waging strongly in the Battlehymn household.

My dad's family is from New York.  I suppose that's why Manhattan is dark red.

I suppose Nashville could be considered between Oklahoma City, Lexington, Winston Salem. :p

Shows me in far west Texas (where I was raised) with influence in Baton Rouge and New Orleans, which makes sense since my mother's family is from there.

South/central Wyoming.  Not surprised at the result, but surprised at how accurate it is.  Where did they even find people from the area who would participate in the study?  There are only about 20 to 40 thousand there.

I got San Jose, Fremont, and San Francisco, California.  Born and raised in San Jose, so it was pretty accurate.  Funny thing is, people ask me where I am from all the time, or ask me where I got my accent, and they have for most of my life even when I was living in San Jose  :rofl:

I answered the questions as I knew they would be from where I was born and grew up -- but no longer speak that way.

For example, the carbonated beverage I called "pop" as a kid, but now I call "soda."

"Devil's Night" is the night before Halloween where mischief is played, windows are soaped and trees are TP'd, but there is no such "event" where I currently live.

So the end result is, the graphic shows that I grew up in the Detroit/Grand Rapids/Toledo area, which is true. But if I were to take the test based on the way I speak now, I would be curious how that would wind up.

I took the test again and now it's got me situated in Rochester, NY and Madison, WI. Curious.

Yeah, I do have some Italian in my lineage.  My maternal grandmother.  Her birth certificate was written in Italian (I've seen it--my mother has it), and she told me that she didn't even speak English until she was 16.
