Here, Grant runs a Head Start program that covers 16 counties and provided free preschool, free diapers and free food to 2,086 children. This is the rugged bottom of the federal safety net: A few weeks ago, a Head Start staff member took a parent permission slip to the Union County jail so a child’s mother could sign it behind bars.

Another mother once told her son to steal beanbags from the play area. The family cut open the bags and cooked the beans.

I read it on the internet, so it must be true!

Actually, some bean bags DO have dried beans.  The small bags that are used in tossing games often have dried beans. 

Bean bag chairs, on the other hand, generally have the other, inedible, pellets of polystyrene or some similar material.

My wife's dog often tries to eat one of the wooden dining room chairs. He never did that when W was in office so it must be BamBam's fault. Why does BamBam hate dogs?

I was out 20 miles south of Cortland this past week--directly downwind of a dairy barn about a mile away.  The freshness of the odor told me that there were likely humans nearby, in case I needed them to come by (I was at an unmanned gasoline pipeline pumping station).  It was strong, but nothing I haven't smelt before.  I didn't mind it in the least, as if I moved 15 feet in any direction, it dissipated.

I agree.  I haven't seen any reports or studies that prove kids do better by going to head start.  It's just another government hand out, sucking money out of the system.  Barry wants to make it mandatory for all kids.

No less than the DOE released a study that showed no discernible difference after 2nd grade.

Spot on correct and when they finally reach school they proceed to teach them nothing that used to be basic.
No proper spelling,no arithmetic tables,no American history...just nothing.

I did a stint of "required" volunteer work for a college course I took years ago at Head Start.  It was party time for the parents that dropped off their unwanted children.  They would return reeking of booze with red, drooping eyes.  The only good thing about Head Start was to give the kids a break from their worthless mothers for a bit. 

The object of making us volunteer was to get us motivated to do volunteer work in the community.  All it did was expose me to the reality of a baser society and teach me that helping these types is stupid… stupid… stupid.
