According to Bob White of the Hay River Ski Club, which hosts the event, this was proven even more so years ago with a surprise at the finish line.
One year, when the racing distances were longer than they are today, one contestant was lagging well behind everyone else. When she finally arrived at the finish line, most of the crowd had dispersed and she was wearing nothing on her top half except her racing bib, White said, chuckling.
So, the Great Ptarmigan/Rabbit War has become a human winter sporting event.
