Domino's Pizza Workers Protest Low Wages, Get Fired

Employees of a Washington Heights Domino's claim they were fired from their delivery jobs after complaining to management about unfair wages. Workers at the 181st street chain participated in last Thursday's nationwide walkout in solidarity with the country's underpaid fast food workers, which included strong numbers of workers and supporters in New York City. Following the walkout, delivery workers—who are paid under $6 an hour and rely on tips to make a living wage—were asked to work extended hours inside the restaurant but were not offered increased hourly pay for their time inside the store. After bringing the issue to management's attention, the 24 employees were fired.

Yesterday, Assembly Member Gabriela Rosa and Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez joined a group of vocal activists in a rally outside the uptown chain, demanding that Domino's rehire the unjustly terminated employees. “Having all these workers fired, not able to bring the food to their families, in part of a season when we are supposed to be able to give thanks and share with others, is really outrageous,” said Rosa. The duo, along with other community leaders, will return to the chain at 6 p.m. this evening and every evening henceforth until the workers are rehired, according to a press release.

Workers and advocacy groups continue to ramp up protests and walkouts to demand a living wage and the right to unionize, which would protect them from examples like this one at Domino's. “The national fast food strikes have brought the industry’s systemic mistreatment of its workers into the national spotlight, and we will continue to build momentum, continue to organize, until every employee receives the living wage of $15 wage that he or she deserves,” Rosa continued.
Calls to Domino's were unanswered; we'll update if we hear back.

Guess it's time to take those organizational skills to the Senate, huh, DUmmies?

Why does New York City have a Domino's in the first place. A city that is known for good pizza should not be poisoned by Domino's.

Here's an idea for you DUmmies, if you are working a low wage low skill job, replacing you won't exactly be a chore, so you might not want to strike unless you want to go from making minimum wage to no wage.

The ones down here make 4-10 dollars for a single tip. Add the fact that they're delivering 5+ orders at a time, it can be well over 20 bucks an hour. Yeah, cry me a river. I have a friend that started this way. Paid his way through school with it and is now managing one. It's called a work ethic, Progs.

If they keep pushing the working wage concept and unionization on fast food restaurants then some one is going to figure out how to automate the whole process and all there will be is a supervisor who job is to load the raw materials into the machine and occasionally run some cash to the bank.

They are already busy doing that. There is a company that has a burger making machine that can make upwards of 400 an hour. It pays for itself in less than a year. Apply Moore's law to that type of automation and the entire workforce for fast food franchises is gone within a decade.

Not only will the food be less expensive, higher quality, and no body fluids in your food. The first chain to offer this is going to greatly increase their market share.

A pizza delivery driver is not supposed to be some sort of career, you idiots.  This is the kind of supplemental job you take when you want to get behind some bills or something.

The only group that actually benefits from minimum wage increases are the unions.  My understanding is that union wage scales are based on percentages/multiples of the minimum wage. Ergo, whenever their politician puppets score them a minimum wage increase all the union wages go up automatically, without expending the effort of having to go through new rounds of negotiations with the unfortunate businesses chained to union labor.

I used to deliver pizzas and could make decent money on tips.  It was a sliding scale though, the more pizzas I delivered the less base pay I made.  Remember though, these Einsteins are in NY, a Dem cesspool, they don't tip.  They probably take the workers tips to spread the wealth.

Mine were ok, but had some that would stiff you in heart beat.  Though, like you said, the good tippers always got their pizza's quickly.
