Police block Mexico hospital....

...6 may have radiation exposure...

Quote
PACHUCA, Mexico (AP) -- Federal police blocked access Friday to a central Mexico hospital where six people were reported to have been admitted with radiation exposure.

(snip)

...only one person was dizzy and vomiting, which are symptoms of radiation poisoning.

This is actually a big problem for rad accidents, basically the hospital needs to have a 'Hot line' kind of decon setup outside the door they enter where their clothes are dropped and they are washed down to get any emitting residue off of them.  The patients aren't radioactive themselves, but any dust radioactive dust or particles they've been exposed to (And may have on them) are highly dangerous to the unprotected.

If these idiots did not actually break up the Co-60 slug that was in the vessel, their rad poisoning would be all from gamma radiation with no residual particulate emitter issues to clean up, of course the slug itself (Wherever it is) remains very dangerous, but those poisoned by it are not themselves a danger to others.

If the dumbshits broke it up looking for the creamy caramel center, though, there are all sorts of particulate contamination problems.

Mexican cobalt-60 thieves will soon die of radiation exposure, say officials
http://www.theverge.com/2013/12/5/5177440/stolen-cobalt-60-found-in-mexico

Quote

The radioactive material hijacked in a Mexico truck heist has been recovered and, although the two gunmen remain on the run, officials believe they won't have long to live. The abandoned cobalt-60 was found removed from its casing about 25 miles from where it was stolen, according to The Washington Post, meaning that the men responsible will likely have been exposed to a material described by the International Atomic Energy Agency as "extremely dangerous."

"They will, without a doubt, die."

"The people who handled it will have severe problems with radiation," says Mardonio Jimenez of Mexico’s nuclear safety commission. "They will, without a doubt, die." The discovery of the truck and cobalt-60 brings to an end a two-day hunt across six Mexican states, with authorities worried that the thieves might have been looking to create a dirty bomb.

I suspect that somewhere there's a drug cartel involved. After all, one cartel is busy selling iron ore to China.

Maybe they thought they had something they could sell to terrorists.

I would imagine the patients have been decontaminated once they removed their clothing and washed their hands, and even then that would only have been an issue if they had been playing with the Co-60 itself.

However, IIRC, Co-60 is metallic, unlike Cs-137, which is usually powdery, and was the isotope in question in Goiania back in the 80's, so it's not like the thieves in Mexico were rubbing this stuff all over themselves.

And even if they were exposed to several times the lethal dose, that doesn't make them radioactive, of course; although I'm sure that's of little comfort to them as their guts basically liquefy.

I have read that people who are exposed to radiation can emit radiation, but it is not a lot. It occurs if they are exposed to large amounts. It is a horrible way to die. Their blood becomes water.

The Cecil Kelley Criticality Accident
http://www.fas.org/sgp/othergov/doe/lanl/pubs/00326644.pdf

Quote
Kelley’s anxiety and restlessness were eased only by Demerol. After about ten minutes, the nurses were able to measure Kelley’s pulse (160 beats per minute) and his blood pressure (80/40). His body emitted a small but measureable amount of gamma rays, and his vomit and feces were sufficiently radioactive to give a positive reading on the detector.

Quote
Because Kelley had been irradiated with neutrons, the sodium and other light metals in his blood were “activated,” or transformed into radioisotopes such as sodium-24. His average whole-body dose was first estimated by measuring the radioactivity of his blood. It appeared to have been massive—in the range of 900 rad from fast neutrons and 2,700 rad from gamma rays, giving a total of 3,600 rad—and certainly lethal.

Yeah, that's mainly 'Neutron induced radiation' and high energy gamma ray secondary effects, but for that to produce really dangerous levels of radiation, the thing, place, or person concerned pretty much has to be directly exposed to an unshielded reactor or be well inside the 'Total destruction' radius of a nuclear blast (The latter, of course, not being much of a treatment problem for medical care providers as far as radioactive patients are concerned).

500 rads is generally considered to be about the lethal dose, though technically it's the '50 percent of those exposed to it are going to die within two weeks' dose.  Rads and REMs aren't used that much anymore, for the last couple of decades radiation hazards have been discussed in different units, 'Centigrays,' one of which is the same as one Rad for purposes of how much ionizing radiation they measure.

Yup--5 Sv is equal to 500 Rem, which is what is called the LD50/30, meaning 50 percent exposed to that amount would die within 30 days.

And the amount of exposure they'd have to take to emit SIGNIFICANT (>0.1 mr/hr or 1 microSv/hr) radiation would be massive, as DAT stated--think THOUSANDS, if not tens of thousands of Rem (or 10-100 Sv.)

Gray is to Sievert as Rad was to Rem--Rad doesn't take into account biological damage, of which alpha is by far the worst if the material is ingested or inhaled.  However, Co-60 is a beta/gamma emitter.

To put it into perspective, my LIFETIME exposure is about 1.5 Rem, or 0.015 Sv, of which I got about 50 mr (500 microSv) over the seven years I was at Seabrook.

These are the thieves that stole a truck carrying radioactive machinery (from a hospital I believe)a few weeks ago. The truck the radio-active material that was in a protected box that would have been gotten rid of in an area made to store such material. The driver stopped to make a
phone call (I believe) and ignorant thieves took the truck. Seems that they broke into that box and fooled with the Co61 material inside and thoroughly inundated themselves in radio-activity. I hear that the Mexican government is going to make a Sit-Com out of this story. If they live and that is doubtful, they should steal a truck with a bomb on it next and have a picture of them tapping the end of the bomb with a sledge hammer.
