and it has zero to do with dirty bombs. The last time there was an incident in Mexico it was in Ciudad Juarez. people died back then. Some material is missing, so worst case, quite a few people could die from this. She did not quite state how dangerous this is, regarding gamma ray release. It is very concentrated, and indeed if the thieves broke into it, they already are likely dead, and not a nice death either. Acute nuclear radiation syndrome is not a nice way to go. (As she indeed did state)

blah, blah, know-it-all blah....

Now back to not really contributing much mode. (We should be so lucky.)

From the file tape it seems the truck stopped for gas early in the morning, and the town is in the State of Mexico, which is besides the DF.

The official said that the nuclear source was removed from the containment unit, but they already surrounded the area, so nobody approaches within a certain distance.

He also added that the individuals, "took the box out of the truck, and the containment box, where the radioactive source was. Perhaps out of curiosity, or whatever motive, they took out the radioactive material. We do not know where these people are."

The article also states that they are expecting them to be very sick due to acute radiation and will land in an ER where they will be found. (IMO they could already be dead). Officials are also saying that they do not expect any risk to the population in general, but I know this is quite standard.

Now I added this since it might help, but otherwise, really, whatever.

Oh and I will add this, it's about 20 minutes from Naucalpan, from google maps. This places it at most, with traffic, an hour from Mexico City, no traffic, 30 minutes. I am very familiar with that area.

Please, nadin, it's Mexico. No one in the civilized world cares.

Of course, the story was over before the crazy dwarf reported it:

4. And there are conflicting reports whther they found it in full

or not

In the begging [sic] the Federal Attorney's General Office confirmed the finding of the boxes, though it refused to confirm that the radioactive material was inside. On it's[sic] part, the government of the State of Hidalgo, (ok photos show state of Mexico personnel) said in a comunique that the box was found open in the State of Mexico.

Notwithstanding, the Federal Nuclear Safety Commission said that they found the boxes with the nuclear material.

My cynic mind tells me, we will know for sure in the next few hours.

http://www.prensaescrita.com/adiario.php?codigo=MEX&pagina=http://www.milenio.com

Rough summary, they are now in the securing, and shielding of material to transport to the nuclear site in the State of Mexico. They are making sure none was lost, those who were exposed are very sick or dead, and the company that did the transport violated rules. There was no GPS tracker or official escort. They are supposed to have either of those. They will review the rules. (As usual nuclear accidents always lead to that)

There have been some evacuations, per reporter in the field, while authorities say that there is no risk to the population at large.

Oh and the amount missing, 40 grams.

Time to stock up on canned milk with the sub captain again.
This could hit us harder than Fukushima.

That is enough, over a short term, to cause radiation sickness. Will keep reading more papers...

I suggest to my colleagues that they are missing the obvious.  It turns out that "microns" is just an abbreviation for a groundbreaking new unit of measurement.  Being a scientist (among other things), nads clearly feels justified in subjecting scientist and laymen the world over to her own standardized unit of measure: the Micronad.

The Micronad can mean anything at any moment, for as long as necessary, and then change back in an instant without warning, justification, or relation to previous definitions.  It can be applied to the laws of the quantum mechanics, psychics, mathematics, chemistry, astronomy, animal husbandry, political philosophy, and anywhere else nads sees it fit and necessary to apply.  In short, the Micronad is the Calvinball of units of measure:

With this invention/discovery, nads has propelled herself into the upper echelon of scientific measurement work, alongside John Wilkin, Anders Celsius, Lord Kelvin, Daniel Fahrenheit, Et al.

Using circular reasoning...there are 60 crons in a Mexican meter and 6 microns to the cron so 60 X 6 = 360 decrons .....a perfect circle.

According to CNN story from the IAEA:

40 grams of Co-60.

Based on the age of the source and the amount it decayed, that came out to about 111 TBq, which means 34 Sv/hour at 1 meter, or in more common terms, 3000 Curies, and 3400 Rem/hour at 1 meter, meaning LD50/30 dose would be achieved at 1 meter in about 10 minutes, but they were a lot closer than that.

Bq-Becquerel, equal to one decay per second.
Sv-Sievert. 1 Sievert equal to 100 Rem.
LD50/30--Lethal dose to 50 percent of people exposed within 30 days.
