Two unions for prison guards, teachers fail certification elections

Two unions representing prison guards and state teachers failed to muster enough member votes to continue negotiating over wages, according to election results released Thursday.

Gov. Scott Walker's collective bargaining restrictions prohibit public employee unions from negotiating with managers over anything beyond base wage increases based on inflation. The restrictions also require the unions to hold annual certification elections to see whether members want the organizations to continue to represent them in those limited negotiations.

A Madison judge ruled in 2012 the provisions were unconstitutional as they apply to local public unions, such as school district and municipal workers. The state Supreme Court is reviewing that finding.

The 2012 ruling had no effect on state employee unions, however. Five of those unions held elections beginning on Nov. 1. They wrapped up at noon on Thursday.

Under Walker's restrictions, 51 percent of a union's eligible voters must approve of the organization continuing to negotiate on their behalf. The Wisconsin Employment Relations Commission released data Thursday afternoon showing three unions representing assistant district attorneys, tradesmen, such as electricians, carpenters and bricklayers, and state attorneys made the cutoff.

But only about 15 percent of 5,412 Wisconsin Association For Correctional Law Enforcement members that WERC deemed eligible to vote wanted to retain the union as their wage negotiator, according to the data.

Only 49 percent of the 664 voting members in the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 24 chapter that represents teachers who work in state institutions such as prisons voted "yes."

This isn't good is it?? I really thought the unions would be back strong. D*mn.

Walker promised the union members that if they liked their union representation, they could keep their union representation or not keep it.  It seems like it was just yesterday when the unions failed to convince Wisconsin voters to go along with their socialist schemes, now they can't even convince their own members.  Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

1. Wow, this is going to be a feather in Walker's cap. I'm surprised ...

both Corrections and AFSCME failed to recertify. Of course with Walker's experience in rigging elections ....

2. Guards are down--

they have been beaten. It is almost like they have given up. I know many of them and it is depressing to see this happen. Prisons now have a culture of every man or women for themselves--lots of infighting going on. Trying to get on the good side of supervisors --stuff like that.
I'm sure an Elizabeth Lie-awatha Warren presidency will reinvigorate them.

5. Don't feel real sorry for prison officers

The great majority of them voted Republican one of the reasons being guns. They should now look to their wages going down so they may not be able to afford any more guns. Karma sure bites.

This is, of course, after Harry Reid gave us filibuster reform.

Starting to like Scott Walker more and more.

Interesting read from the Des Moines Register yesterday about 10 possible Republican candidates in 2015/2016.  Granted, the article contains quite a bit of the predictable left-wing slant.

Here is the profile of Scott Walker:

Quote
10. SCOTT WALKER
Background: Walker, 46, is the governor of Wisconsin.

Most recent Iowa visit: May 23, for the Polk County GOP’s spring fundraising dinner.

Crowd size: 600 present, 800 tickets sold.

Media attention: Iowa and Wisconsin political press. One national reporter.

Message: “Reform happens in the laboratories of democracy, which is our states,” Walker said. Republicans need to be more optimistic and speak in terms that are more relevant, he said.

Prospects for 2016 presidential race: Republicans have a deep reservoir of respect for Walker for successfully taking on labor unions in Wisconsin. The GOP has a long history of favoring governors for the White House. He got a sustained standing ovation from the Iowa crowd, the same reaction national Republicans had at his 2012 convention speech, insiders said. He has impeccable credentials with social conservatives and tea partiers, two must-please factions for anyone trying to win the GOP caucuses here.

We also like Chris Christie when he was going after the unions, but he turned out to be a raging moonbat on several other issues, I'm not saying Walker is the same I just don't know much about him on the other issues.

I may not lock my doors while sitting at a red light and a black man is near, but I sure as hell grab on tight to my wallet when any democrats are close by.

I don't either, Freeper.  I said in a separate thread the other day, I'm cautiously optimistic about Walker, but just don't know enough about his views on enough issues.  Just part of our deep bench of younger Republicans.  Whether he is a true conservative is yet to be determined.  Plenty of time for that come out.

I've seen him a few times lately on FOX.  He's hawking a book.  I think that's a pretty good indication that he's going to run.

I also think Dr. Carson might run too.

Oh, and even Gov. Perry has made a few gestures that way.

The fact that WI went from a "no-issue" to a "shall-issue" state with his signature says a lot for me.
