my husband lost his job this week

they called him on monday and fired him over the phone. they haven't given him a reason yet, but i'm sure they will when he goes to pick up his last check. he suspects a couple of things it could be, but they aren't very good reasons.

ill timing for sure, but i'm not in panic mode. he's already filed for unemployment and is putting out applications. he can drive big trucks and move heavy boxes, so i'm hoping he can get on with ups or fed ex, at least for the holidays. he's thinking about going to get his cdl permit, too.

there is no way we can live on my pay alone, but we have rent covered, bills are paid for the month, car insurance isn't due for a couple of months and i can feed us pretty cheaply. i'm no stranger to the food bank and am probably still signed up with them. we do have to get the car aligned and, as much as i hate to do it, that will probably go on the credit card. i can defer my student loan payments if need be.

it won't affect our thanksgiving because dad foots the bill on that. christmas will be what it is, i know everyone will understand if we can't do much.

our big problem is that we have $75 in savings, so we have nothing to fall back on. and it also means that he has no health insurance, so i need to figure out what that means in regards to the aca.

i know i will feel differently if nothing has changed in a couple of weeks, but we'll deal with that when it comes. no use in worrying about it, all we can do is hope for the best and plan for the worst. but good thoughts would be appreciated nonetheless.

gl, DUmbass, hope things work out.

Umm, won't you need to know that when you apply for unemployment compensation?  :thatsright:

been in a funk lately and my hair has always been the one thing i can change about myself, so i did. did the same thing for my 30th and it is the most fantastic feeling.

And she recently talked about committing her husband to a loony bin.
That could have something to do with his job security.

No doubt he will qualify for a wonderful policy with maternity care and free birth control. Not one of those junk plans that only covers what he needs.

It does in Illinois.  They actually do investigate the circumstances.  Simply being fired or quitting doesn't cut it, amazingly enough.

Here, if you lose your job through no fault of your own, you can get unemployment.  But "fired" over the phone sounds like something he caused.  Also, another law here, if your fired or laid off, you have to be paid right away.  It's illegal to withhold final pay until the next scheduled pay period.

....and lift heavy boxes, but Dad foots the bill for Thanksgiving.

 :???:

:lmao:  Up here north of everywhere, one needs a CDL to drive a school bus 2-3 hours a day.

Her husband better up and start studying for one, and practice backing a trailer into a dock or garage.

Fun for us Yankees is sitting on the dock watching the folks try to maneuver their boat trailers into the water.

Or better fun is in SF. watching folks try to parallel park on the hills.

Takes more to making a living driving a truck, normal truck then one with more then 4 tires. And just because Hubby can today lift 50 pounds does not mean he will not in the future throw out his back and be out of work for 3 months.

Good old Dad footing the bill for Thanksgiving.   I wonder when you will learn to save money and not stop living paycheck to paycheck.     Will there ever come a time when your kids can say you footed the bill for any kind of meal ????

Keep your eyes on the Penny's,  Get a big empty pickle jar and every night put your change into it be it only a nickel or dime.   When you use coupons for 25 cents off an item put that 25 cents into the jar.   Buy something half off, put the savings into the jar.    Quit smoking and put  $25.00 a week into the jar.

Amazing the money we can save if we keep our mind on the penny's.  Every 6 months empty and sort it out,  you may find a couple hundred bucks in change if not more.

I did once live paycheck to paycheck for a short time it was awful. Only by using every trick in the book to SAVE money did I get out of that trap.  I canceled all credit cards but one for emergency's, this one had had no charges for 6 months.   At 5 months I canceled it and went with another card that had no charges for 6 months and on and on. When I was forced to use the card I made sure I could pay in full in 30 days.

So much money is hidden under our nose, we use it not knowing we do so.   Living pay check to pay check is a losers deal. one thinks they have no choice but if they take the effort to watch the penny's they can soon dig themselves out of a hole.

Sheesh, $75 in savings? That's pocket lint! You have to be a special kind of idiot to consider that savings.  Guess you really can't expect much more than that out of professional victims though.  Just for full disclosure... I'm a huge proponent of the cushion system.  I hate having to balance a checkbook so having a rough idea of the monthly output and staying well below that makes the accounts grow.  It's really not rocket science. You'd think the smartest people in the room would have enough financial knowledge to not dance around the red hole month to month but I guess that's really asking too much.

She writes about Thanksgiving Dinner as if it ranked right up there in importance like rent and the electric bill. From what I read, they don't even have kids. I can't imagine making my parents buy my food for Thanksgiving, if I didn't have the money. I'd make rice and beans or eat cereal and be thankful for the food on my plate. You don't need turkey and pie for that.

Don't know what Colorado's rules are.

72 hours in WV, Dori. When I worked for the restaurant chain here locally back in the 80's, when you fired someone, you took the money out of the safe or register, depending on the amount, had the firee sign the documentation, and sent them on their way. That was a state law. Been too long ago to remember what the federal law was but I seem to recall at the time there was no federal law. Might have changed now. You also had to fill out documentation and send it to the state labor board, unemployment, etc.

Pain in the ass is what is was. Usually we just cut the employees hours to 5 a week, and then we they came in, we told them they weren't needed that day. They got the hint and quit on their own. Saved on unemployment too. A lot of the ones we needed to get rid of were thieves and the crew would do that on their own. They didn't want corporate security coming in and making life miserable for everyone. Those assholes would nail you for getting a coke. I didn't care if my girls would get a coke. Shoot I didn't care if they got a meal... as long as my food cost was good. It's that way in every restaurant.

One thing I learned back then... we you got people that are busting their ass for peanuts, they hate a thief. Especially if said thief steals from their fellow emps.   :cheersmate: :cheersmate:
