DUmmies Discuss Thanksgiving Dinner
« on: November 20, 2013, 10:01:51 PM »
In this thread, the DUmmies discuss Thanksgiving dinner and come up with some really revolting ideas.

As always, the day after Thanksgiving they'll be discussing the blistering arguments they had with their ignorant repuke fundie relatives.

But for now, they roll out the DUmp cuisine, beginning with the DUmmy fizzgig, who shaved her head in a fit of anger, and recently had her husband involuntarily committed:

it it too early to talk thanksgiving menus?

sister and i had our strategy session today and we're off to the store on friday. this is our one big, blow-out meal of the year and as exhausting as it is, it's always worth it. it'll be dad.

here's what we put together.

nibbles:(cool it, stevenumbers, it's nibbles,  not nipples)

onion dip (we cut the mayo in half and make it up with greek yogurt)

spinach artichoke dip (which i decided on just now)

chips and veggies for the dip

devilled eggs (just not for me, not an egg fan.)

turkey will be made using america's test kitchen's recipe

sides:

cornbread and sausage stuffing

mashers with gravy

brussel sprouts with bacon and apple

from-scratch green bean casserole (we do use french's fried onions, though)

cranberry sauce

popovers

dessert:

sour cream apple pie

pecan pie

this year we're doing it entirely gluten free, too. i won't lie, i'm a bit dubious about the pie crusts, but it doesn't really matter because i don't really like pie crust.

i'm going to try to get out of work early next wednesday (which for me means seven) so i can go over, knock out as much prep as we can and bake my pecan pie. i'll probably just crash on the couch.

oh, and i'm expecting some serious food pr0n photos

America's Test Kitchen has great recipes, but........Gluten Free Thanksgiving!?!?!?! Gross!! Brussels sprouts? Grosser!!

Here's a weird one:

1. Here's mine!

Turkey, obviously

Stuffed pumpkin (roast it, scoop out interior, mix with rice, asparagus, mushrooms, onions and place back in the pumpkin)

Boorak (Assyrian eggrolls consisting of beef, onions, peppers and parsley -- family loves them so they are on the menu for every holiday!)

Whipped sweet potatoes

Roasted cauliflower with pancetta and parmesan

Dessert: Pumpkin cheesecake AND I think I'm going to try the Baked Indian Pudding recipe that was posted here. Seems like the perfect Fall/Thanksgiving dessert.
Eggrolls and a stuffed pumpkin!?!?!
That would make a hell of a revision to the Norman Rockwell painting.
Grandma bringing out the big Thanksgiving platter with a jack o'lantern on it!

DUmmy Lucinda is the major domo of the cooking group, so you know she's going all out for Thanksgiving:

2. I think it will be just the two of us this year

So maybe something different like steaks or homemade tamales....not sure yet!

More Brussels sprouts:

8. Just the two of us too.

So.....I bought the traditional leg of lamb that we will probably do on the grill. Mashed potatoes because I love them and maybe shaved Brussels sprouts. And definitely Heretic's Indian Pudding.

And even more Brussels sprouts:

7. Here's what we're doing this year

Various appetizers that others will bring

Turkey using Alton Brown's method -- 500 degrees for 1/2 hour, then cover breast with foil, lower temp to 350 and cook until breast hits 161 degrees.

Ham

Sage dressing

Sausage and cornbread dressing

Mashed potatoes and gravy

Roasted Brussel sprouts
What's with all the Brussels sprouts at the DUmp? Gross.

They're definitely one of those grow-your-own crops that will save a bunch of money at the grocery store.  I need to look into them for next year.

I'm definitely going to have to try them in my garden this year.  I love brussels sprouts.

I'll have to take over one of the raised beds from my brother.  He planted them full of herbs and flowers and let them die.

Okra is heavy and oily.  Brussels sprouts are light, savory, and go well with bacon and potatoes.

I would describe okra as slimy.

A very small amount is okay in gumbo. Otherwise okra should not exist.

Brussels sprouts are great with roasted potatoes, celery, onions, and carrots.  The only way I can eat them plain (the way my mother served them) is with lots of brown gravy.

The only time I get fried okra, it comes from a frozen bag. :(

I don't enjoy frying stuff at home.  It's too messy.

We used to get fried okra and Brussels sprouts as kids. Loved 'em, but hard to find fresh okra around here now. However there's usually breaded okra in the frozen foods. When I find 'em fresh, I pickle 'em.

Roger that. Don't see why people complain about the cost of brussels sprouts when all the dirt you can eat is just outside the door.

My wife bakes brussels sprouts with olive oil . . . They are great!  Gotta do a whole bunch of them next year.  Maybe some here at the house, and some on the Town land behind the house . . . !

What's with all the devoted fans of the Brussels sprouts?  I cannot even get them down the gullet, and chewing them makes me gag.  Yuck.

Fizzgig puts mayo in her onion dip?  It should just be sour cream & the Liptons.

Brussels sprouts make good ammo for carbide cannons.
Probably the only thing they really are good for.
Then-Chief Justice John Marshall observed, “Between a balanced republic and a democracy, the difference is like that between order and chaos.”

John Adams warned in a letter, “Remember democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet, that did not commit suicide.”

Like this but we use bacon fat instead of olive oil.
"Liberalism is an essentially feminine, submissive world view. Perhaps a better adjective than feminine is infantile. It is the world view of men who do not have the moral toughness, the spiritual strength to stand up and do single combat with life, who cannot adjust to the reality that the world is not a huge, pink-and-blue, padded nursery in which the lions lie down with the lambs and everyone lives happily ever after."

Love brussels sprouts.  Steamed, baked or grilled and served with butter, salt and pepper.

Fresh breaded and fried okra is great too.  I use the frozen ones for gumbo.
