Thursday evening, I went to a local museum for a presentation on horse thief gangs- or as I prefer to call them...

The presentation, Bullets, Badges, and Bridles, was made by John Burchill, associate professor of criminal justice at Kansas Wesleyan University. His new book, of the same name, examines the history of horse thief gangs and anti-horse-thief associations in old Kansas.

I got a couple of good ideas to incorporate into my novel about Bass Reeves- I am going to go back and do a re-write. I also pre-ordered his book, which should arrive before Christmas.

There are a few family trees out here that had horse thieves in them...

The Salina newspaper was known to alert citizens to lynchings by printing such oblique notices as "The trees along Mulberry Creek are bearing strange fruit."
