Why do you hate Apple products?

After watching the video below, I did some soul searching to try to figure out why I'm so annoyed by Apple products. Yes, the fanbois are really annoying. But I surprised myself when I figured out the real reason: By going against the grain, Apple users make communication and file sharing more difficult. For example, I'm the person everyone goes to for help with computer problems. Sometimes I have to take over their computer with TeamViewer. If I had a mac, I wouldn't be able to help them and vice versa. In the past, something as simple as sending a Word file to a mac user proved difficult (I think that problem may have been resolved by now). I find it interesting because I usually treasure uniqueness, but when it comes to tech, I guess I have an authoritarian-like fall in line attitude.

I do it all the time.

And I tracked it down to docx, it is a MS quirk, we save in doc.

After only three days of research, she discovered that .doc and .docx were not the same thing.
Most sysadmins would have needed at least a week.

They are not 100% compatible. Neither is 2010 and 2011.

This was done by Microsoft.

It took three days of reading Ars Technica and a few others to figure this out. It was driving her and me nuts.

2010 is not fully backwards compatible with 2007 either. And 2013 is not 100% backwards either.

Doc, on the other hand, is. It is not as full featured, I am the power user, not the boss.

FYI, HTML 5 is as well, but word adds too much crap to the file.

For personal use I have gone retro and use txt with multimarkdown language

You know how many problems I have with file sharing? Almost none.

The word file problems, after extensive research, I tracked them back to...drum roll, Microsoft.

Knowing is half the battle, so I save in a file format that is 100% compatible between the bosses Word and mine. They are separated by a year. It is a well known headache with docx. One inserted, mind you, by the good folks at MS.

And I prefer not having virus headaches in at least one machine.

It's really clever how she refers to Crazy Miriam as "the boss".
She wants the DUmmies to think she has a "job", and gets "paid".

Sync went the way of the dodo two OS versions ago.

You can do it, but really it is done seamlessly over the cloud

I can do it physically, but have not bothered.

There is a reason my field recordings are not in my music library. I do not need them on the IPad.

As to the phone, and data plans, I just do it over the secured home wifi.

My android I find it annoying as hell, and not as responsive. Next phone I get, going for an IPhone.

If Crazy Miriam would spring for a bus ticket, she could import a great sysadmin from New Jersey.

His politics would fit in with hers, and it would free up nutcase nadin to chase more grass fires.

This is the hard thing. Files saved in later versions of almost any program are not going to be opened in the older program. I'm going to let the sooooper jeanus Nadaindabrain in on a sooooooper jeanus solution; save as. There is feature in programs that really only soooper jeanus software programers know about. You go to File on the tool bar, then click on the Save As box. This will bring up a "Save As" dialog box with many drop down boxes for naming, and file type. Now this is where it gets complicated so I am going to type slow; click on the file type box and it will give you options to save in an older version of the program. Now that file will be able to be read by the older and the newer program. I can understand not knowing about this new "Save As" feature. It is pretty rare to have different versions of software that need to interface.

Hit save.

Works 100% of the time when I transfer files from my MacBook Pro using Office for Mac 2011 to the Windows box at work.

This works for other MS related products as well.  I'm not a "super-genius" like Nads, but I do a bit of programming, and find it's necessary for others to able to use what I write.

I used to do this in reverse.  I had a windows box and the newspaper at Ft. Stewart was published on Mac.  I'd write a story in my barracks room on Office for Windows 6.0 (back when it took 24 floppy discs to install) save it in a Mac format and take it to work.
