pretty common on lots of newer cars.  Had a Jimmy that was like that, made it really easy to change out too.  It's actually a good swap for older cars if you want to go with the bigger disc brakes.  My horribly liberal little brother kept a '98 GP for awhile and never took care of it, he finally trashed the transmission this year. had loads of miles on it.
The last time I replaced wheel bearings was an MG B.  Before that was a Datsun 280ZX. :p

Grand Prix (and GM in general) are horrible cars to work on.  I had a friend with one and one of her wheel bearings started going out.  I assumed it had a separate spindle-and-bearing setup like every other car in the world.  Nope.  The wheel hub and bearings were part of a single assembly that had to be replaced as a whole.

Unfortunately I had occasion recently to find out that Ford Explorers built in this Millennium use the same system on the front hubs.  "No user serviceable parts" and the replacement costs about ten times the price of a set of bearings for an earlier model.

It's pain in the ass territory...man I remember the blown gasket on my old car. Parts laid out everywhere...unholy nightmare getting it all back together again.

If it's a 4-cylinder, could be done in a few hours.  I replaced one on a Isuzu P'up in less than an hour, hardest part of the whole job was getting the timing chain back on.

"V" engines take a little longer.  I've done a V-8 Chevy head gasket in 4 hours.  Gasket was leaking so bad, the engine would be hydrolocked after it was parked.  I had to pull the spark plug from that cylinder to blow the coolant out of it to start it.

As far as Kali is concerned, you could have written that statement in Croation.

I'm a female and I understood every word.  :P

She has learned a vital lesson.  If you don't know jack about something, take somebody with you who does.  Or at least drive the car to a mechanic and have it checked prior to purchasing.  Surely she won't make this mistake again after she gets past the whining, "He ripped me off!" stage.

Two things I've learned about DUmmies.  First, they lie, they always lie.  Second, they never learn, ever.

I got a 93 Buick Century that so far has had 4 wheel bearings put on the front (2 per side).

Used to eat one about every 40K until I put aftermarket aluminum rims on it.  The last set has been on for over 90K, and the car has 270,000 miles on it.

What brand of bearings were you using? I had an LBJ castle nut fail on my wife's suburban after I'd put it on.  Probably not the best idea to get suspension parts with 30 day warranties on them.
