Source: BBC

India has successfully launched a spacecraft to the Red Planet - with the aim of becoming the fourth space agency to reach Mars.

The Mars Orbiter Mission took off at 09:08 GMT from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre on the country's east coast.

The head of India's space agency told the BBC the mission would demonstrate the technological capability to reach Mars orbit and carry out experiments.

The spacecraft is set to travel for 300 days and reaching Mars orbit in 2014.

Acceptable jokes include: "Great, India! Now master indoor plumbing," or "I lit a fart after Indian food once and I got to JUPITER," or
"Hey, India, Mars may be red, but I doubt that's curry."

Anyway, as usual, we got there first, and India is FOURTH. Like, not even BRONZE. Does DU care?

5. Good for them

Imagine what the worlds scientists could accomplish if they were all allowed to work together. The possibilities are staggering.

Well, they all went to school HERE, or at least 95% of them did.

Maybe we can hitch a ride with them instead of the Russians.
I may not lock my doors while sitting at a red light and a black man is near, but I sure as hell grab on tight to my wallet when any democrats are close by.

The US and Russia reached Mars orbits, and India may be the fourth, but who was the third?

Oh yah, I forgot about the EU's cottage industry. When did it happen, and what did they accomplish?

The Indians (and Chinese) who fill graduate schools here might move back to their native lands at gunpoint, but no other persuasion would work.

They're here to stay.

When I was in grad school, the takehome on a monthly stipend was about $750. In those days it was enough to have an apartment and food and not a lot else.
The Chinese students, of which there were many, would cram 10 people in a two-bedroom apartment and they'd each send about half of their stipend home.
Because in mainland, real China, $300 American was a CRAP-TON of money.

For most Chinese, three hundred bucks is still three months' pay.

It was a problem for a lot of the people who lived in adjacent apartments. 10 people in 700 square feet isn't as sanitary or quiet as you might think, believe it or not.

Taking the shot, is easy.
Hitting the target is a whole different ball of wax.
I hope they candled the rocket.  :-)
Then-Chief Justice John Marshall observed, “Between a balanced republic and a democracy, the difference is like that between order and chaos.”

John Adams warned in a letter, “Remember democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet, that did not commit suicide.”
